In a tradition 104 years in the making, the OFFICIAL START TO SUMMERTIME IN THE USA is proclaimed in Toledo, Ohio. Each year, on the first Saturday in June, the ancient Visigoth Rulers of Spain, King Wamba and Queen Sancha visit Toledo's Historic Old West End Neighborhood at the King Wamba Carnival Parade. Known for over a century as “The Mardi Gras of the North”, “Wamba” showcases the cultural and ethnic diversity unique to the Old West End. Individuals representing at least six states journey to Toledo, to create a visual odyssey of art cars, floats, performance art and musical presentations. The grand finale is the coronation ceremony, where King Wamba and Queen Sancha give their official announcement, “Let Summer Begin!” q.. http://toledooldwestend.com/owe-festival/ https://www.facebook.com/HistoricOldWestEnd https://www.facebook.com/OldWestEndFestival event page for festival: https://www.facebook.com/events/373999742705357/ page for music in the arboretum: https://www.facebook.com/events/159123257602128 page for the parade: https://www.facebook.com/events/486294511437799/ parade of houses map: http://toledooldwestend.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/MapParadeHouses.pdf the Toledo City Paper partnered with the OWE and produced our festival guide this year which is in this week's TCP and also online: http://www.toledocitypaper.com/May-Issue-2-2013/Old-West-End-Festival-Guide More information can also be found on the OWE's website: http://toledooldwestend.com bq.
