Cleveland Browns at Kansas City Chiefs - 27Oct2013
Browns at Chiefs. 1:00 p.m. game. Watching game on main living room TV with audio provided by Browns announcers on radio. The radio, however, is about 20 seconds ahead of TV.
First Quarter
KC got opening kickoff. Drive led to field goal.
After short kickoff return, Browns started their first possession inside their own 20. First play, a run, lost 2. Second play was a little out pass to M. Gray who gained a few yards. On 3rd and long, deep pass to Gordon went incomplete. For some reason Gordon pulled up and did not run the route at full speed, and he had a step lead on the defender. If Gordon ran, he may have caught the pass. It was good pass. Gordon was not hurt. Radio announcer suspected Gordon lost the ball in the sun.??? He's not a top-flight receiver. He's a good Browns receiver, but he would not start for many teams.
After the Browns went 3-and-out, they punted. 50 yard punt, 2 yard return. Chiefs started at own 30-something.
Chiefs driving. The Browns defense continues to look bad.
The Browns defense was ranked number 7 in the NFL at start of last Sunday's game. This week, the Browns defense is ranked number 11. Misleading because the Browns are ranked number 29 in the league in 3rd down defense. Opponents convert on 3rd down 45 percent of the time.
Chiefs on their second drive are converting on 3rd down again. Chiefs have 2nd and 8 at Browns 14. KC QB Smith misfires on a wide open WR at the goal line. Should have been a Chiefs TD.
Kruger sacks Smith on 3rd down. Chiefs settle for another field goal. So the Browns defense playing the bend but don't break D. That's okay. Field goals should not defeat a NFL team, unless it's the Browns offense.
In this game, need to see better play by the Browns defense and Gordon. Browns defense has allowed 55 points over the previous 6 quarters. Browns defense got lucky on the Chiefs second drive. Smith overthrew the open receiver for a TD.
4:46 left in the first.
Benjamin returns bounding ball from the end zone. Good return. Browns start on own 35.
Bess drops a pass. 3rd week in a row. Would have been a first down.
2nd down play, pass caught for 8. 3rd down pass complete but for no gain. Odd. Another 3 and out after having decent field position.
After the punt, Chiefs start on own 19.
Chiefs driving a little. Ends the first qtr with KC on their own 40-something.
Second Quarter
Chiefs convert on 3rd down to start 2nd qtr. Chiefs are 5 of 7 on 3rd down. The Browns defense looking to be the worst in the NFL on 3rd down defense.
Browns defense has held KC to two field goals, but the Browns defense surrenders too many yards and too much time of possession.
KC 2nd and 5 at Cle 35.Inc pass. 3rd and 5.
Smith flushed to his left, runs to Browns 12. 23 yard gain. KC now 6 of 8 on 3rd down.
KC 3rd and 10 at 12. Chiefs execute a screen pass play like Browns defense is not on the field. RB open with at least 3 blockers in front. Touchdown.
KC now 7 of 9 on 3rd down. Browns lucky to be only down 13-0 and not 17-0, since Smith misfired on previous poss.
10:26 left in 2nd. 13-0 but it feels a lot worse. Browns offense has had two 3-and-outs. KC has had three nice drives with two consuming a lot of time.
Browns commit penalty on kickoff return. Browns start on own 5 yard line.
1st down play, run loses a yard.
2nd down play, underneath pass to McGahee, gains one. 3rd and 10 from own 5.
Pass compl to Obj, along left side. Obj runs along sideline and out of bounds.?! 4th and 3. Only one KC defender was with Obj along sideline. Why not try to cut it back inside and take on the defender? Maybe break a tackle. No chance when simply running out of bounds.
3rd straight 3 and out for Cle. Browns need a lot more on offense than a QB. And the Browns defense may need a lot of help too. Defense was obviously way overrated after the first few games.
Chiefs start on own 37. Two plays, gets first down.
3rd and 3 at Browns 45. Smith scrambles and slides to near first down line. Measurement. Short a few inches. Looked like he had it on replay. Good spot for Browns.
KC head coach Reid challenges the spot on the 3rd down play. It's 4th and inches. KC was going to go for it prior to the challenge.
After the official review, refs rule that Smith got the first down. Good challenge by Reid.
Chiefs now 8 of 10 on 3rd down. Wow. That's bad defense.
Another 3rd down for KC. 3rd and 3 at Cle 35. 4:14 left in 2nd. KC chewing up clock again.
Timeout KC. 3:45 left in 2nd. Maybe the KC offense needs a rest.
Smith throws 3rd down pass into ground. Nothing available. A 3rd down stop by Browns defense. Shocking.
KC misses 52 yard FG.
Time of poss thus far:
- 21 minutes for KC
- 5 minutes for Cle
Cle starts on own 42. First play, pass compl to Cameron. First down. Cle's first. Browns at KC 38.
Cle executes flea-flicker play. Campbell handed off to McGahee who lateraled back to Campbell who completed long pass to Gordon around the five who runs into the end zone for TD.
Nice pass by Campbell. An easy catchable ball by Gordon who did not drop it or blame the sun for not seeing it. Then Gordon acts like an asshole in the end zone. When Gordon makes "real" big time WR plays, then he can act like a buffoon in the end zone. But over the past 2 or 3 games, Gordon has looked mediocre.
Browns got good field position after the missed KC field goal. Two play drive for TD.
2:44 left in 2nd. 13-7 KC. Browns bend but not break defense has kept Browns in this game. KC has squandered scoring opps, especially when considering how long they've had the ball this half.
2:00 minute warning. Chiefs at their own 40-something now. Another KC first down.
1st and 10 KC at own 46.
When the Browns defense actually makes a good play, the Browns act like they are the greatest.
Short pass gains 9. 3rd and 1.
Simple handoff, sweep left, gets first down. KC 9 of 12 on third down.
KC at Cle 28.
Next play, pass to end zone, diving catch. Touchdown. Any celebrating by the Browns defense on these last few plays?
1:11 left in 2nd. 20-7.
Browns defense has given up 75 points in last 8 qtrs.
Browns start on own 20 after touchback.
Pass gains 6. Out of bounds. Stops clock.
Draw play to Obj gains nothing. Odd play. 3rd and 4. Clock running.
Pass caught by Gordon on own 29 and runs big. A simple, short crossing route. Browns at KC 26. Gordon went out of bounds on that play.
:30 left.
Pass inc to Gordon along sideline at 5. Good defense. Unsure what the Browns announcers are whining about. Pass was high.
Pass inc to Little. Ball behind Little.
3rd and 10 at KC 26. :21 left.
Pass inc in end zone to Little. KC defender in better position to catch it. Little played defense to prevent interception possibility.
FG is good. 20-10 with 0:10 left in 2nd.
At least Browns offense has shown some life on the last 2 possessions. Unfortunately, the Browns defense has shown no signs of stopping KC from scoring. KC missed a 52 yard FG, and Smith misfired on an open WR for TD that resulted in a FG for KC. KC could easily have 7 more points. Browns lucky to be down only 10 instead of 17.
Browns defense in 2nd half need to force some KC punts. Browns get the ball first in 2nd half.
Halftime: KC 20 and Cle 10.
Third Quarter
Browns start second half at own 20 after touchback.
First play, pass, gains 15. Nice.
And then the Browns follow up that nice start with a false start.
Bubble screen out to left to Gordon who gains 14. Wow. 2nd and 1.
McGahee runs up middle and gains 5. First down. That's two straight first downs.
Cle at KC 49. 1st and 10. Pass compl to Gordon. Really nice pass and catch. Cle at KC 28.
Pass inc to Little. Off his hands. Left sideline. Pass behind him a little but catchable.
Campbell scrambles out of a sack and runs for 5. 3rd and 5. Browns call timeout.
Campbell drops back to pass and then runs forward for a gain of 4 yards or so. Looked like he was well short of first down. Browns think they got a bad spot. Actually, I think the refs gave the Browns a good spot. It will be closer than I thought. Refs measure. About a half yard short.
Browns going for it. They know that they need TDs cause the Browns defense has not forced a KC punt yet.
10:52 left in 3rd. 4th and 18 inches. McGahee gets hand off and gains 3 or 4 yards. Good hard running and good line blocking. Well done.
Cle 1st and 10 at KC 17.
Campbell pass to the right sideline, caught by Whitaker about the 8 yard line, and he runs in for the TD!!!
What a drive by Cle. 80 yard drive.
9:58 left. That was a 9-play drive. Wow. That looked a professional football team.
So will Browns defensive coordinator Horton, who likes to run his mouth with stupid comments, complain about his defense being tired now? They've had the halftime rest and the time it took for the Browns offense to drive for a TD. The Browns defense should be ready. They need to force a punt.
Horton made goofy comment this week about how the Browns defense will play much better in coming weeks, and weeks from now, people will look back at what Horton said this week, and say that Horton was right about the defense. He's talking in the 3rd person in the future, who knows. Weird. Just coach.
After touchback, KC starts on own 20. First play is a first down pass. Gains 11 or 12. So much for forcing a 3-and-out.
KC is 7-0, the only undefeated team in the NFL, is not blowing teams out with a ton of scoring.
On next series, KC fails to get first down. First punt of the game by KC. Finally, a good Browns defensive stop.
Browns start on own 24 yard line after KC punt.
Browns lose 2 yards on first down and gain 3 on 2nd down. 3rd and 9. Oh man.
Campbell passes to Cameron at 28 who then rumbles for the first down. Pass caught well short of first down marker, but it results in a 15 yard gain. Holy moly.
Cle at own 39. Now the Browns are chewing up some clock.
1st down play gains 3. That's okay.
Pass inc to Bess. 3rd and 7. Cle 2 of 7 on 3rd down today. KC 9 of 14, I think.
Short pass gains 5. Rats. Good tackle. 4th and 2.
Browns punt fielded at 10 and returned out around KC 21. Return man run out of bounds by number 47 MarQueis Gray. The former Minnesota Gopher QB is listed as a tight end for Cleveland. Gray switched to receiver half-way through last season. Give him credit for wanting to be an NFL player at any position he can make work. That's different from Tebow who could probably play TE, but he thinks he can start at QB in the NFL. Tebow is athletic. Why not try a different position?
KC on its first series has 3rd and 7. Browns defense need a BIG stop here. KC at own 25.
Smith drops back to pass, he cannot scramble away, and Smith gets tackled for no gain. Maybe a loss. Yep. Smith lost 2 yards. 4th and 7. Wow. Another punt, and it was after a 3 and out.
Benjamin returns punt to Browns 30. He's not getting up. And a flag is down. Two different holding penalties on the Browns punt team. Gray committed one of the holds. Unsure what Benjamin hurt. He got hit while spun around trying to avoid a tackle, and he got tripped up. The play did not look rough.
Benjamin walked off the field on his own. He's being examined on sideline.
Browns get a first down. Now at own 22.
McGahee runs for 14. Wow.
Gray checks in.
Long pass inc to Gordon along sideline at KC 35. Good coverage. Gordon cannot make the bigtime catch in traffic.
Wildcat play for Cle. Direct snap to McGahee gains 7. Nice.
3rd and 3. Browns 2 for 8 on 3rd down. Cle at own 43.
Short pass, check down, out to right to Obj, stopped short of first down marker. Browns now 2 of 9 on third down while KC is 9 of 15 or something like that. KC was 9 of 12 on third down plays. Browns defense has thwarted the last 3 or so KC third down plays.
3rd down plays today. Browns offense needs to improve dramatically and the Browns defense also needs to improve, but at least the defense has stopped the last few KC third downs, especially this half.
3rd qtr ends. 20-17
Fourth Quarter
Browns, 4th down and 1.5 yards to go. Cle at own 44. First play of 4th qtr is a punt. 44 yard punt. 21 yard return. But hold on KC. What a shock. A penalty on a punt return. That's the first penalty of the game for KC. Amazing.
14:47 in 4th. KC starts on own 22.
Simple handoff, left side gains 6. Crowd is subdued. Prob a little shocked.
Hey, KC false starts. I think. KC lineman complaining to the refs. But nope. Refs call penalty on the Chiefs.
Chiefs complete pass for 18 yards. Oh man. Big chance for the Browns defense to force another quick KC punt.
KC on own 40. Smith is sacked Phil Taylor for a 4 yard loss. Nice. Almost a face mask.
KC on own 36. Quick slant pass is behind intended receiver. Browns defense has definitely woke up this half. Rusher forced bad pass.
3rd and 14. Now need a stop. Another sack!!! Holy moly. D'Qwell Jackson with the sack.
KC backed up to its 20-something. Punt. Browns flagged for running into the kicker. The five yard type of penalty. Close. That was almost an epic fail by the Browns special teams. KC either declined the penalty or it was enforced at end of return.
Browns start at own 27 with 11:48 left in game.
Quick pass over middle to Obj who gets hammered by LB. Obj gets up slow. Oh man. That was a collision. KC LB is okay.
Long pass caught by Cameron!!. Great catch. At KC 36. Cameron had to turn around and he fell down as he made the catch. Only problem was, nobody on KC touched him. Cameron simply stood up and he did not run after the catch. He may have garnered more yards or more.
Browns called for holding. 1st and 20 at KC 45.
Now Campbell sacked. Browns backed up to its own 46. 2nd and 29. Try to complete a medium pass here.
Browns moronically chose to run the ball, and Obj loses yards. On a run on 2nd and 29.
Browns 3rd and 31 at own 44. Screen pass gains 8. WTF? Why not heave the ball down field to Cameron or Gordon and see if you can draw the pass interference or make the big play? Why a simple dump off screen that would not have gotten the first down. Cowardly football. Just throw the bomb to see what happens.
KC allows punt to roll. Downed around 5. Holding penalty on KC.
KC starts on own 1 yard line.
First play, pass inc. Haden called for holding.
1st and 10 for KC at own 6.
Smith throws med-long pass along left side. WR had a step or two on defender but pass overthrown. Browns defense lucky there. Another bad misfire by Smith. That could have been a big play for KC.
Run gains a couple. Oh wait. I forgot. It's the NFL. Pro-offense. Give the runner forward progress not because he actually made it that far but because he might have made it that far if nobody tackled him. So the refs with the incredibly favorable spot give the runner a 4 yard gain.
3rd and 6. Pass inc. KC punting again.
Holy hell!!! Bess drops the punt at the KC 45. Why is this guy on the team? He drops passes and he now drops a punt.
This is on the Browns coaching staff. Put someone back there who has a record of holding onto the ball, and put Bess in the doghouse.
Little has trouble catching passes and kicks. Bess same thing. Browns need a lot of players on offense.
Browns defense does its job again. Instead of the Browns offense starting on KC 45, KC has the ball on its own 47.
Bess caught the punt cleanly, but he fumbled the ball on his own when he switched the ball from his right arm to his left arm. Nobody hit him to force the fumble.
KC has third and long on its first series, and they get the first down.
KC at Browns 41. I cannot believe this. The clock is now 4:58.
Bess blew the Browns chance to get a field goal op to tie the game. Nice job. It would be different if a jarring hit caused the fumble. But it was a boneheaded, unforced error.
KC 2nd and 18 at Browns 49. 4:17 left.
Swing pass to left gains nothing. Browns call timeout. 4:10 left. Browns have one timeout left. 3rd and 18 for KC. The Browns defense cannot surrender a first down here.
I bet KC does not try a dumpy screen pass. I'm guessing KC throws downfield to try to draw a pass interference or make the big play for first down. Does not matter here. If KC gains 10 or gains nothing, the punter should be able to pin Cle back. So KC offense may as well throw deeper pass for first down.
If KC gets a first down here, they could be in FG position, and they would take clock down to under 3 min if they got stopped on next series.
But defense needs stop here.
Smith, shotgun, drops back, moves to his right, and Smith is sacked by Jackson!! Big loss. Another timeout by Cleveland. Their last.
4:02 left in game. 4th and 28 for KC.
Holy hell. Bess is back again for the punt return. Defense did its job. Cle, however, had to use its timeouts, so not a ton of time lost.
Bess holds onto ball. Fair caught at own 15. 3:55 left. So a 40 yard difference in field position and at least 60 fewer seconds and no timeouts thanks to Bess's fumble on the previous KC punt at the KC 45.
But the Browns defense prohibited KC from driving a short distance and getting a field goal. The Browns are still only down 3. In the second quarter, I would not have guessed the Browns would have this chance.
4-down territory everywhere for Cle offense now.
Pass around the 20 to Gordon is inc. 3:50 left. Browns need a lot green to get a FG chance.
Crowd into the game now. And multiple Browns players moved early. False start penalty. The crowd noise may have had a factor there.
2nd and 15 at own 10. Short pass caught by Bess. Gains 6.
3rd and 9. 3:45 left.
Campbell's pass caught by Cameron. Gains 10 or 11. Nice.
Cle at own 28. Campbell throws ball away. 2nd and 10. 3:12.
Campbell scrambles for first down run out past own 40, but Thomas for the Browns flagged for holding. Amazing. 2 penalties on this drive. This is a killer.
2nd and 20 on own 18.
Campbell hit and fumble, but it appeared that KC was offsides. Yep. Obvious offsides. Break for Cle.
2nd and 15 at 23. 2:55 left. One minute of clock time has elapsed and the Browns have gone only 8 yards. Drive started on own 15 with 3:55 left.
Campbell scrambles and runs for 9. 3rd and 6. Two plays to get 6. Clock running. Browns offense is taking too long to call play.
Pass inc at the 40, the first down marker. KC blitzed. Campbell got hit by two Chiefs as he threw it.
4th and 6. 2:12 left. KC calls timeout. That helps the Browns, really. This gives Campbell a minute to gather himself after that last play when he got hit hard.
4th down pass is dropped by Bess. The Browns need to release Bess. This guy is useless. He his hurting the Browns. Why is the coaching staff playing him?
Campbell scrambled to his right and while near the sideline, Campbell threw the pass back to his left into the middle of the field. Bess came back to the ball. Bess slid his slide to make the catch. The ball lands in his lap and he drops it. It would have been a good catch. Not a great catch. It would have been a fine play by Campbell. Bess was a few yards beyond the first down marker. All Bess needed to do was corral the ball. The ball plops out of his lap. I don't get it. It was a basic rump-sliding catch. Nothing too extraordinary. A good play that NFL players should make.
TV crew is showing replays of Bess's dropped passes and the punt fumble. Nice.
3rd and 1. 1:08 left. KC called another timeout. Okay. Browns say thanks.
Browns defense has been great on 3rd down this half, but this is 3rd and 1 at Cle 23.
Sweep left is stopped short. KC uses last timeout. 0:22 left. 4th and 1. KC lining up for FG.
40 yard FG attempt is good. 0:17 left.
Benjamin did not return after being injured on that one punt return. That's why Bess was in to return the punt that he fumbled.
Benjamin also returns kickoffs, but he's not in now.
Touchback.
Browns on own 20 with 0:17 left. Hopefully, Campbell heaves the ball down field. No dump off passes. Throw one up around midfield to see if can draw interference penalty or make catch.
Short crossing pass is caught by Gordon in the middle of the field??? Why?? Gordon runs to his right and gets tackled in bounds. Browns don't get another snap. Moronic. If going to throw short, throw to the sideline. Whatever. They should have done an end around to Bess.
Chiefs are not flashy, but they are 8-0.
Final score: KC 23 and Cle 17.
Cleveland's record: 3-5.
ESPN story Alex Smith-led Chiefs turn back Browns to stay undefeated
3rd down efficiency
- Cleveland 3-12
- Kansas City 10-19 (9 of 12 in the first half)
Browns defense and Browns WR Josh Gordon are overrated.
Browns defense is one of the worst in the NFL on third down defense.
Gordon meets expectations. For the Browns, that might make him appear to be a great receiver, but Gordon does not start for some teams, and he is not the number one receiver on other teams. He's a good receiver for the Browns who lacks players. Cameron is a tight end.
Gordon catches the ball when he's open and the pass is laid into him nicely. Hence, he does the minimum and meets expectations. Campbell targeted Gordon other times when Gordon was covered, and Gordon did not come down with the pass.
Great receivers make catches when they are not open. Great receivers attack the ball. Gordon does not do that.
The Browns media have a misguided view on Gordon. They think Gordon is worth a number one draft pick. If the Browns found a team (sucker) willing to give a second round draft pick for Gordon, then the Browns should make that deal.
Gordon is one more infraction away from a 12-month NFL suspension.
Jason Campbell passing was good:
- 22 of 36
- 293 yards
- 2 TDs
- 0 ints
Gordon receiving:
- 5 receptions
- 132 yards
- 26.4 average
- 1 TD
- he was targeted 10 times
One play was a short pass followed by a long run by Gordon. The other big play was on a trick play, the flea flicker.
Cameron had 4 receptions for 81 yards, but he was targeted only 4 times. Why aren't Cle QBs throwing more toward Cameron? Is he not getting open? He's a big target, and he make good catches.
