synopsis...
deep low pressure just northeast of lake erie will continue to move
northeast today. high pressure over the southern plains will
gradually build into the ohio valley tonight through wednesday then
shift off the new england coast thursday.
&&

near term /until 6 pm this evening/...
falling temps will be the biggest weather issue today as arctic air
spreads over the area. wind chills will be dropping well below zero
from west to east as temps fall toward zero and winds of 20 to 30
mph occur. the wind chill warning still looks in order for the next
few days.
the snow will be a tougher issue to deal with due to changeable
conditions. the nam and gfs differ on how much mid level moisture
will be over the northern part of the cwa this afternoon. mean low
level west flow sets up today into tonight so a winter storm warning
in the snowbelt may work out as there should be a decent lake effect
shsn along with blowing snow and wind chill readings falling to 20
below or lower later today into tonight.
outside of the snowbelt...most of the accumulating snow is over so
will be concentrating on the wind chill warning. there will be some
blowing snow but with little or no accumulating snow falling...will
just mention the blsn in with the wind chill warning. however...in
the nw where more snow occurred yesterday and early last night will
keep a winter wx advisory for blsn going there into this evening.
&&

short term /6 pm this evening through wednesday night/...
wind chill warnings that run thru 9 am wed morning will be left as
is for now. may be able to downgrade the warning to an advisory
sometime tue night as low level warm advection begins and the core
of the arctic air is pushed ne of the area while the winds also
diminish. likewise...as winds back more to the sw may eventually be
able to end the winter storm warning for part of the snowbelt as the
lake effect snow bands shift more ne into erie co pa or wrn ny.
just as the lake effect should be tapering off wed as conditions
become less favorable...another upper trough dives se into the area
along with a weak surface cold front. an overrunning situation
develops and a band of deeper moisture sets up over the area. will
stay with plan to increase pops wed into wed night for widespread
light snow to develop.
&&

long term /thursday through sunday/...
the weather portion of the forecast is not real clear but the
temperature trend will be moderating temperatures to above normal.
for thursday will keep the likely pops in the warm advection and
with a weak upper trof moving through...confidence is low. chance
pops thursday night...still keeping it mainly snow...this will have
to be watched. on friday dry...in between systems. for friday night
and saturday more precipitation is expected with a front moving
through the area. models not in agreement in the precipitation type.
with the southwest flow went with a mix. kept sunday mainly dry with
high pressure building over the area.
&&

aviation /12z monday through friday/...
the low and cold front that moved through the region during the
night was moving quickly away from the region. a little vort lobe
was moving through ne ohio this morning causing some snow.
elsewhere some light snow or flurries and plenty of blowing and
drifting snow was occurring. strong winds with gusts between 30
and 35 knots will continue through tonight. the best chance for
lake effect snow this afternoon and tonight will be east of
cleveland. some question was the ceilings will do at inland
locations later today. at this time will try to improve them to vfr
for this afternoon and tonight...since the flow is westerly.
outlook...occasional non vfr in lake effect snow across ne ohio
and nw pa tuesday and tuesday. more non vfr possible across the
entire forecast area wednesday through thursday night.
&&

marine...
gale force winds will be developing quickly this morning in the
strong cold advection. the winds should be the strongest this
afternoon and evening. at this time sustained winds of 40 knots seem
strong enough with much higher gusts. gale force winds will continue
through tuesday evening. with the west to southwest winds low water
will occur even with the ice on the west end. it may not get real
low because of the ice. the heavy freezing spray warning continues
in the ice free areas.
southwest winds will return on wednesday and continue into saturday.
winds will become west saturday night after a cold frontal passage.
a small craft advisory may be needed on the east end through sunday
morning until the winds become southwest as high pressure moves into
the ohio valley.

synopsis...
issued at 759 am est mon jan 6 2014
the coldest air seen in several decades will grab hold across the
region into tuesday night. falling temperatures can be expected
into tonight with readings bottoming out in the 15 to 20 below
zero range by tuesday morning. 10 to 20 mph winds will cause not
only blowing and drifting snow...but extreme wind chills in the 35
to 45 below zero range into early tuesday. lake effect clouds and
snow showers will occur across extreme northwest indiana and much
of western lower michigan. this will help keep temperatures
somewhat warmer but still bitterly cold. conditions will begin to
improve tuesday. however...highs will only range from 5 below to 5
above zero with warmest readings once again closer to the lake.
&&

short term...(today and tonight)
issued at 456 am est mon jan 6 2014
winter storm continues across the area as focus shifts from falling
snow to blowing and drifting snow along with extremely cold
temperatures. headlines for blowing and drifting snow and wind
chills main issue with this package.
western areas were upgraded to blizzard warning last evening for
expected increase in winds and impacts more than strict warning
criteria...which was officially never met anywhere across the cwa.
however...numerous reports of white out conditions at times
overnight...occasional wind gusts to 35 knots...interstate and
highway closings and substantial drifting supported the decision to
upgrade. question now is what to do with headlines today. with snow
ending outside of lake effect areas it will be difficult to reach
vis restrictions of one quarter mile for any length of time.
upstream obs support this with 20 to 30 knot winds across il only
reducing vis to between 1 and 3 miles at worst. winds are expected
to increase again today with modest mixing and intense cold air
advection in lower levels. hires guidance suggest gusts to 35 knots
possible at times late morning into afternoon over central and
northeast sections of cwa. given amount of fresh snow and reports of
roads already closed or reduced to single lanes and dangerous
temperatures...have opted to extend winter storm warning
versus downgrade to blowing snow advisory as belief is that current
and ongoing impacts warrant more than just an advisory. will allow
blizzard warning to continue and expire at 12z as scheduled but will
then likely reissue winter storm warning back to these counties
through mid afternoon. again this due to impacts with significant
number of road closures including major highways and interstates and
expected cold and strong winds. with daylight and no falling
snow...significant vis restrictions will be localized and brief.
this is a bit unusual but given the circumstances feel this is more
appropriate.
winds to subside slightly overnight but still remain in the 10 to 20
mph range. additional headlines will likely be needed but expect
advisories can replace warnings by this time.
temperatures continue to fall rapidly early this morning as western
areas dropping below zero at 08z. expect this fall to continue
through much of the day with strong cold air advection and highs
occurring early this morning. wind chills already into the lower 20s
below zero in the west at 08z and expect these to reach close to 40
below near or after daybreak and continue through tonight. guidance
has trended warmer for lows tonight but ecmwf the exception and
opted to stick closer to its mos which has had a good track
record.
lake effect snow final issue to deal with. dgz will fall today which
should begin to limit amounts. already seeing this with lighter
returns on kiwx 88d. still expect persistent snow showers with small
flakes through tonight...shifting into michigan later today.
additional accums of 1 to 3 possible today and again tonight but the
higher amounts will be localized and confined to northern portion of
berrien and cass counties in michigan.
&&

long term...(tuesday through sunday)
issued at 456 am est mon jan 6 2014
bitterly cold air will be over the forecast area early tuesday with
wind chill indices near -40f. for this package...favor the ecmwf
that has been handling this event very well...especially with the
low level thermal fields. the ecmwf has early morning temperatures
tuesday between -15 and -20. kept the wind chill warning in effect
through early tuesday evening...although wind chill indices will
likely rise above -25f over the southwestern portion of the forecast
area by late in the day. winds should back over southern lake
michigan tuesday as inversion heights fall...causing lake effect
snow showers to end. the deep polar vortex will drift north...but
will continue to keep a position further south than normal for this
time of year...with negative height anomalies over western north
america into this coming weekend. this setup should allow
temperatures to rise above normal late in the week. concern for an
active pattern once again as the gulf should be able to open up
ahead of short wave trofs moving through the long wave pattern. both
ecmwf and gfs ensemble spread is very large...reflecting a large
range of solutions over the second half of the week. kept chances
for precipitation most periods...with a chance for rain and snow as
temperatures continue to warm.
&&

aviation...(for the 12z tafs through 12z tuesday morning)
issued at 720 am est mon jan 6 2014
clearing has worked into kfwa while lake effect clouds and
occasional snow showers continue near ksbn. strong northwest winds
today will generally keep visibilities in the mvfr range. snow
showers at ksbn this morning should move north of taf site later
today as winds back and bands shift north. kept mvfr vis tonight
with blowing snow as well.

//discussion...
westerly winds will increase through the morning hours behind the
departing low pressure system. wind gusts are expected to reach 25
knots or greater mainly in the afternoon and evening hours. the strong
wind gusts will cause some blowing and drifting snow to occur at the
terminal sites reducing visibilities significantly. in
addition...light snow showers will be possible mainly at the
northern taf sites /ptk...mbs...fnt/ as lake effect snow ramps up in
the afternoon and through the overnight period. some of these lake
effect snow bands could produce heavier snow squalls dropping taf
sites into the ifr category or even lower.
for dtw...blowing snow will be a concern at dtw in the afternoon and
evening hours as wind gusts reach up to 30 knots. at this
time...have left out any snow chances after 05z as snow bands will
have a more difficult time reaching these sites after midnight.
//dtw threshold threats...
* high probability that ceilings will remain below 5000 ft through
the taf period.
* high confidence in precipitation falling as snow through the
forecast period.
* low confidence in visibility below 1/2 mile in bursts of snow and
blowing snow monday afternoon.
* high confidence in westerly wind gusts of 25 knots or greater
monday and monday night.
&&

prev discussion...issued 426 am est mon jan 6 2014/
short term...today and tonight
last vestiges of the winter storm are winding down early this
morning as remaining area of light snow continues to shrink and
gusty northwest winds subside.
the lull in the weather will be rather brief as arctic air surges
into the area this morning and continues to deepen into tonight.
westerly winds will increase quickly during the morning from i 94
south as strongest wedge of unmodified arctic air pivots into the
region. these winds will bring bitterly cold wind chills to the
warning criterion of 0-25f before noon. as wind gusts increase to 30
mph or so...blowing and drifting snow will also become an issue
given the 8 to 15 inches of fresh snow that fell with the winter
storm.
these conditions will migrate northward through midday into the
afternoon as the arctic airmass covers lower michigan. it appears
the winds will be strongest from i 69 south (and especially from i
94 south). for these region...will transition the winter storm
warning to a winter weather advisory flow the blowing snow. in
addition...lake effect snow squalls will develop and bring the
possibly of a few inches of snow to some locations. these snow
showers will further reduce visibilities and make travel that much
more difficult.
north of the i 69 corridor...winds remain in check through the
morning and only start to get a bit gusty this afternoon. this keep
wind chills relatively manageable through noon...so will back off the
start time for the wind chill warning. this will also reduce the
potential for blowing/drifting snow...so no advisory will be issued.
this will have to be monitored by early this afternoon as winds do
increase.
these conditions continue into tonight as temperatures plunge well
below zero (-15f from i 94 south) with gusty winds persisting...the
wind chills will fall to near -40f in these areas. further to the
north...lake effect snow showers/clouds will moderate temperatures
ever so slightly...keep them (above) -10f. winds will ease some so
the winter weather advisory will expire at 10 pm.
long term...tuesday through sunday
the peak of the brutal weather from the arctic outbreak will be upon
us at the start of the long term period tuesday morning. the centers
of the midlevel (500mb at -45c) and low-level (925-850mb avg at -29c)
cold anomalies are shown to pass east of georgian bay and south of
lake erie...respectively...between 12-15z. the big question is what
will temperatures achieve on tuesday. very well could be looking at
a maximum temperature at detroit that will be below zero.
noteworthy...as the list for subzero maximum temperatures is a very
short one. only 3 of them in fact...the most recent being january
19th 1994 at -4f. low level theta e progs and 0-1km theta e lapse
rates show a very well defined lake michigan plume gradient pushed
northward to the i 69 corridor. this feature defines the edge of the
lake modified air...warmer north/colder south. overall...there is
low confidence in the temperature forecast with surface
parametrizations and vertical resolution of the deterministic and
global configurations woefully inadequate. used a blend of the
inherited forecast vs. mos/gem. compared this to bias corrected
surface output from the wrf-arw both surprisingly similar. the
official forecast will call for tuesday highs to remain below zero
from m59 southward...with readings in the single digits farther
north due to aforementioned positioning of the lake plume.
wind chills are expected to range between -15 and -25 degrees f
during the afternoon with the wind chill warning remaining in
effect. there is very good model continuity with regards to both the
positioning of the lake plume and good saturation with respect to
ice in the mixed layer. did increase pops into the likely category
for light snow showers in the i69 corridor. breezy winds will make
it very difficult to measure the low water content snow...and will
keep accumulations at less than an inch.
the southern edge of the upper level jet core is only expected to
lift to extreme southwestern michigan and southern lake michigan by
12z wednesday. this will keep cold conditions locked in over lower
michigan throughout the night. lows are expected to range from 0
degrees north to roughly -4 degrees south of m 59. wind chills are
expected to remain between -15 and -20 degrees through 12z
wednesday. for a clean headline...decided to extend the wind chill
warning until 12z.
the weakening upper level temperature gradient on the western side
of the upper level trough signals that kinematics aloft will be
coming to an end. there is good agreement that the entrance region
of the jet core will push into the central great lakes wednesday
afternoon. it is under the right entrance region that a weak fgen
band could support very light precipitation and virga. this is
expected to stripe across northern indiana/ohio perhaps clipping the
far southern cwa. limited the chance for some snowflakes to the
southern 4 counties. there is very little potential to measure more
than an hundredth or two. temperatures wednesday are expected to
moderate into the low teens...with wind chills finally climbing above
the zero mark during the afternoon. clouds hanging tough over the
cwa will probably establish a limit to how good these conditions
will feel. still cold.
marine...
low pressure continues to deepen this morning as it tracks northward
through the toronto metro area. northwesterly winds have only begun
to increase the past few hours and are expected to ramp up into the
45 knot gale range rapidly here the next 3 hours. arctic air will be
extremely cold in this airmass establishing unstable conditions over
the great lakes. the upper level jet stream is expected to park over
the great lakes region during this time which will lock in higher
gradient flow at least through tuesday. decided to not get too
specific with the headlines and simplified the gale warnings by
extending many of them until 3z wednesday. high pressure will slowly
build into the region during the mid week period...allowing winds to
slowly diminish as we head into tuesday and especially wednesday.
