the national weather service cleveland has issued a
- flood warning for ice jam flooding in...
lucas county in northwest ohio
northwestern wood county in northwest ohio
- until 900 am est friday
- at 854 am est...local law enforcement officials reported flooding
across the warned area due to an ice jam along the maumee river
located near grand rapids.
- the ice jam was causing flooding in grand rapids. the water will
continue to back up onto properties as water upstream is restricted
by the ice jam. temperatures are forecasted to remain at or below
freezing for the next week which could reinforce the ice jam. ice
jams are unpredictable and can break up with little notice. if the
ice moves downstream it can become jammed again along bridges or
bends in the river. the sudden release of the jam can also result
in additional flooding downstream. residence along the maumee river
should report ice jams or flooding to their local authorities.
precautionary/preparedness actions...
ice jams are very unpredictable and can break up...move...and jam
again very quickly. water backing up behind the jam can flood areas
under deep water with surprising speed. favored ice jam locations are
where a river bends or slows...at bridge abutments...or near
islands...sandbars...and other obstructions to flow. stay clear of
low lying areas near ice affected rivers and monitor conditions
closely.
