  • Mel Kiper predicts Johnny Manziel will be picked first by the Houston Texans or whoever moves up to number one. A few weeks ago, Mel rated Manziel has having an "adequate NFL arm." Last weekend in the divisional playoff round, the eight starting quarterbacks, I doubt their arms would be rated as "adequate." I don't see how an adequate arm can be worth a number one pick. Mel also said that Manziel's arm strength could be increased with better mechanics. I doubt it. Arm strength is natural born. Accuracy may be improved with mechanics.

NFL MOCK DRAFT - 1/14/2014
ROUND 1

1. HOUSTON TEXANS

(2-14) Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville: Local star Johnny Manziel is the more dynamic athlete. Central Florida's Blake Bortles may possess an even higher upside and new Texans' head coach Bill O'Brien was quite complimentary of him after he and the Nittany Lions faced UCF in September. But due to his accuracy, underrated athleticism and experience in a pro-style scheme, Bridgewater appears to be the best fit in O'Brien's offense. With the immediate results expected in today's NFL, adding the draft's most consistent and pro-ready quarterback to a roster already teeming with talent seems too logical not to occur.
2. ST. LOUIS RAMS (FROM WASHINGTON)

(7-9) Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina: Owners of this lofty pick due to the Robert Griffin III trade, the Rams are in a terrific position to improve their team immediately or for the future. The Rams already boast one of the league's top defensive end tandems in Robert Quinn and Chris Long but that may not stop them from adding the draft's most talented player in Clowney or trading the rights to this pick to whichever team offered the greatest bounty to take South Carolina's superstar or one of the quarterbacks.
3. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

(4-12) Blake Bortles, QB, UCF: The Jaguars may have the least talented roster in the NFL but the team played hard under head coach Gus Bradley and were a respectable 3-5 on the road. Improving at home could get a kick-start with the selection of Bortles, a local standout and prototypically-built pocket passer whose consistent improvement has his stock skyrocketing.
4. CLEVELAND BROWNS

(4-12) Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn: Regardless of the identity of Cleveland's next head coach, the Browns are expected to draft a quarterback with this pick. A passionate fan base might love the idea of Johnny Manziel, but the gusts and grass of FirstEnergy Field may not be the best fit for a quarterback so reliant on his mobility and lacking elite size or arm strength. Otherwise, pairing the most dominant run blocker in the draft in Robinson with All Pro left tackle Joe Thomas could give the Browns the bookend tackles to make a quarterback drafted later likelier to enjoy success.
5. OAKLAND RAIDERS

(4-12) Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M: With general manager Reggie McKenzie and head coach Dennis Allen each on the hot seat, big changes could be coming in Oakland. Regardless of who's in charge, an upgrade at quarterback is necessary. The late Al Davis would have loved Manziel's magical playmaking ability and considering this club's lack of identity on offense, no team is more in need of a lightning rod like Johnny Football.

26. CLEVELAND BROWNS (FROM INDIANAPOLIS)

(4-12) Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State: Until the identity of the Browns' next head coach is known, projecting which quarterback they'll add in the offseason is going to be difficult. Carr's struggles against Southern Cal in the Vegas Bowl has his stock in flux but he possesses as much arm talent as any quarterback in the 2014 draft class, including projected No. 1 overall pick Teddy Bridgewater.
