Late summer 2013 bird sightings at Oak Openings Metropark

Warblers have been scarce the past few days (just a couple of Tennessees), but birds are abundant along the length of Tornado Alley to the south of Oak Openings Lodge.

As stated before, there may be no better spot in Ohio for either Olive-sided flycatchers or Red-headed woodpeckers. I had two Olive-sideds both today and yesterday (one calling), and today there were no fewer than 25 Red-headed woodpeckers.

Other species on the list from this weekend include Yellow-bellied flycatcher, Philadelphia vireo, a handful of Yellow-throated vireos (still singing), and Summer tanager. A pair of Pileated woodpeckers put on a great show today. Cedar waxwings are plentiful.

Cross Swan Creek on Old Wilkins and then head west on the trail that's 150 yards or so south of the creek. Head as far west as you'd like, staying on the wide trail that hugs the south edge of the woods and then cuts across the open field. The birding is great all along. Olive-sideds may be found on the tops of any of the many dead trees scattered throughout.
