although for maketoledo.com and birdbrainsbrewing.com, I'm using the rss2yo service provided by Yo. Simple.

Pretty cool use of #yo combined with my Toledo Weather web app at http://toledotalk.com/weather. I modified the weather code last week to produce a little RSS file of alerts. I could call the Yo API, but I wanted to test the RSS2Yo service, so that's what I did.
The weather code that creates the front page to toledotalk.com/weather executes every 10 minutes in cron.
Around 10:30 p.m., my iPhone received a Yo from TOLEDOWEATHER. I clicked my the icon on my phone's home screen that points to my jQuery mobile-based weather web app and saw the hazardous weather outlook that forecast heavy rains for tomorrow.
Nice. Web sites/app can now offer a notification feature.

Aug 10, 2014 WSJ story
Yo's next iteration will let users send a link along with their "Yo." And a forthcoming service that lets any person connect an RSS feed to Yo means every blogger, website and media outlet on earth will be able to send push notifications to their followers, including links, whether or not they have downloaded a corresponding app. I wouldn't be surprised if "subscribe via Yo" became a button on articles alongside Facebook and Twitter share buttons.
The RSS service already exists and so do the buttons.
