For historical humor, here's the January 2006 Toledo Free Press interview with Brian Wilson, conducted by Michael Miller.

Brian Wilson is having fun, fun, fun at WSPD

And the corresponding Toledo Talk thread, started by Lisa Renee Ward.

And LRW's blog post at the early version of her Glass City Jungle blog.

WSPD's Brian Wilson slams Toledo Talk and blogs

From the interview:

TFP: Did you follow the local Web blog comments about WSPD after Frantz was removed, on such sites as ToledoTalk.com?

Wilson: I haven’t seen it, but every town has a blog, and they are generally populated by Kool-Aid drinkers, mouth-breathers, has-beens, never-will-be people and so on. It’s a game that means nothing. It’s generally a hobby for someone to masturbate their ego anonymously. I’ve been in this business 40 years. They’re listeners. They have no clue how this business works.

(Toledo Talk is a message board, not a blog.)

November 2005 Toledo Talk thread about Fred replacing Frantz in the morning on WSPD.

Late 2005 and early 2006, that was pre-Facebook being open to all, before Twitter, before Tumblr, etc.

Facebook launched in February 2004, but it did not become available to everyone until September 2006.

Twitter started in the spring or summer of 2006, but it gained "widespread" popularity in the spring of 2007 at SXSW.

Tumblr started in 2007. Instagram and Pinterest started in 2010.

The iPhone launched in 2007. The iPad launched in 2010.

Those software and hardware services enabled many more amateurs to produce and share content more easily. I'm guessing that those disruptive technologies tipped over the potato carts of many professional media types who were too slow to adapt and innovate.

January 2006 was practically the dark ages for the production and consumption of digital information.

Man, what's it like to be a media dinosaur in 2015?
