Load the photos that you want to use in your collage onto your computer in whatever size or format you prefer, since GIMP accepts virtually any type of raster (bitmap) file.

Open GIMP. Click "File" from the menu at the top and choose "New." In the dialog that appears on the screen, enter the width, height and resolution you want for your collage. Click "OK."

Click "File" from the menu and choose "Open as Layers." In the dialog that appears, locate the images you loaded.

Hold down the "Ctrl" key on the keyboard and click the images to select them. Click "Open" and all of the images appear on their own layers in "Layers" panel.

Select one of the image layers. Use the "Move," "Scale" and "Rotate" tools to get the photo where you want it in the collage. Repeat this with all of the image layers and save your work.

Press the 'L' key to bring up the layers dialog box.

Press the 'M' key to move a layer.

To scale a layer, place focus on the image being created, and select "Layer" and then "Scale Layer."
