.onion sites

September 2017 update: I learned a tip recently, somewhere, maybe in a Hacker News thread. Obviously, we cannot view .onion sites with a surface web browser. But if .link is added to the end of the Tor site URL, then it's viewable in a normal browser. I'm unsure why at the moment, but it works in Chrome.

For my Tor site below, I can access it via the surface web by accessing this URL: http://zwdqwr2p2xwkpbyv.onion.link assuming that my Linux desktop computer is powered on.

The process may be related to these posts:

https://tor2web.org

Tor2web is a project to let Internet users access Tor Onion Services without using Tor Browser.

That post mentioned other extensions, and it did not mention the .link suffix.

https://onion.link

Onion.link sacrifices client-anonymity for convenience.

Yes, accessing a Tor site from the surface web does not protect the reader, but it still protects the publisher.

  • Dark web - Underground websites such as .onion sites on Tor
  • Deep web - a confusing term typically best avoided if you want precision
  • Deep web (search) - A search engine term often confused with the dark web
  • Darknet - networks that require special configurations or technologies to access such as Tor

some info at:

http://zwdqwr2p2xwkpbyv.onion -- website running on a linux server in my home. accessible when my computer is powered on. i need to buy a raspberrypi to use as a dedicated server. it's mainly for testing though. fun. the site uses the thttpd web server. i also have nginx installed on my home linux computer. the same machine. i'm using my wren publishing app to create the files, and then i copy them to the thttpd server directory. thttpd supports cgi but in a chroot environment, unless i disable chroot, which i don't want to do. within chroot, the cgi app needs to be an executable. i'm fine with creating the html files elsewhere on the same computer and then copying them to the .onion site.
