concerning...tornado watch 286...287...

valid 230451z - 230615z

the severe weather threat for tornado watch 286...287...continues.

summary...a tornado threat continues across the remainder of the
valid portion of ww 286 in northeast to east-central il /south of
chicago/ and across ww 287. in addition...a dramatic increase in
forward speed /50-55 kt to the east-southeast/ of a bowing structure
in northwest indiana /white...northern tippecanoe and western
carroll counties as of 0415z/ will result in an increased
severe/damaging wind threat /gusts to 70 kt/ across ww 287. by
06z...these damaging winds are expected to reach the area from
indianapolis to muncie indiana...and then into southwest oh /from
butler county to around dayton between 07-08z. damaging winds will
also be possible across parts of northern indiana into northwest to
central oh.

discussion...the bowing storm structure in northwest indiana was
moving to the east-southeast at 50-55 kt. wsr-88d chicago radar
indicated an intense and deep rear-inflow jet with this bow /with
speeds of 80-100 kt from the lowest gate to 25 kft agl/. around
0428z...a measured wind gust of 87 mph was observed 5 se lafayette
indiana with this bow structure. expansive cloud-top cooling
continues across northeast and east-central il into northern/central
ind to northwest oh with this forward-propagating mcs. this mcs is
being maintained by a feed of very strong instability /mlcape
2000-3000 j per kg/ over the southern half of il/indiana as the
low-level jet has veered to west-southwesterly and strengthened to
40-45 kt. in addition... 700-mb winds have veered to
west-northwesterly /more parallel to strong 500-mb flow/ and
strengthened to 40-45 kt. given these factors...especially the
already formed intense rear-inflow jet...strong/damaging winds up to
around 70 kt will become likely across central indiana into
southwest oh from 05-08z.
