From the Blade story:

[Kass] urged Mayor Hicks-Hudson and Mr. Ujvagi to help keep neighborhood groups from trying to alter the plans.

That's awesome.

Translation:

No public input will be permitted. Shut the fuck up and take what we force upon you. Neighborhood residents don't deserve to have their concerns and thoughts recognized. The rubes who live in East Toledo are not real Toledoans.

The "tremendous" quotes:

[Kass] added later, “It’s going to be tremendous.”

“We will bring first quality products here, it will be built with tremendous designs and good building materials, and top brands and great operators,” Mr. Kass said.

It's unfortunate that the developments will only be tremendous and not bigly.

Updated list.

Announced Marina District developers:

  • ~2001 - Frank Kass - Columbus
  • ~2003 - Bruce Douglas - Toledo area
  • 2005 - Pizzuti Cos - Columbus
  • 2006 - Dillin Corp - Toledo area
  • 2011- Dashing Pacific Group - China
  • 2016/2017 - ProMedica/Metroparks/Frank Kass - Toledo/Columbus

The first Toledo Talk posting about the Marina District project occurred on Jan 21, 2003, and it was titled Marina District plans keep changing, which pointed to a Jan 20, 2003 Blade story

On a warm summer day more than two years ago, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner and Columbus developer Frank Kass stood next to the Maumee River and unveiled the most elaborate and ambitious development plan ever proposed in downtown Toledo.

At $175 million, the Marina District would add shops, upscale housing, theme restaurants, office buildings, and a movie theater to a drab industrial site that had long been an eyesore on the east side. Topping it off would be a renovated sports arena costing $25 million. "There is no question the east bank will become a beautiful, beautiful destination point," Mr. Finkbeiner said on Aug. 7, 2000.

Back then, I thought that the Marina District dream would be realized before a new arena would be built. That was a massive misfire prediction.

I'd like to see the Marina District dream become functional before I move to Costa Rica.
