Sadly, those suggestions miss the greater point. If that line of thinking is widespread, then Toledo has a ways to go before it has an informed citizenry.

This is not a speed limit issue. It's not a safety issue. It's not a police issue. The current handheld speed camera project is a symptom.

This is an issue about past and current mayors and city council people, which means, it's a voter issue and an issue with the lack of voting. It's unfortunate that most Toledoans have no interest in local government.

Our budget is bloated. Toledo government wastes taxpayer dollars. Observe the asinine explanations that local elected officials give for squandering our money.

Since Toledo government fails to prioritize spending, fails to reduce the budget in a meaningful manner, and fails to obtain all of the necessary funding through so-called legitimate means, the politicians resort to creative scams.

Driving the speed limit does not resolve the longterm financial incompetence of city government.

But when voter turnout this September will be around 15 to 17 percent, it appears that the status quo will continue, and we can look forward to more inventive, money-grabbing schemes.

Obviously, one election won't solve the issues. But it might be helpful in the longterm if more Toledoans became interested in the workings of Toledo government.

In my opinion, voting is the least that a person can do for a community. But even non-voters should understand the nitty-gritty details of local government, including the shenanigans. That information could be helpful in finding solutions, which someday might require voting.

But for now, DO NOT DRIVE THE SPEED LIMIT. Drive recklessly to support our city. Let the city hacks be content with this money-grab, otherwise they will implement another new scheme that could negatively impact everyone.

I support taking money from other people. I wish Toledo government would implement a fat tax on soda and other "junk" food. Since I rarely consume that crap, such a tax would impact me little. Toledo needs a fat tax to give the appearance of caring for our health. And as always, think of the children.
