Our 2013 garden plants
In 2012, I reluctantly replaced my swamp milkweed bed with a small, produce garden. In 2013, I expanded the garden by removing more lawn and removing some flowers from our main Oak Openings native flowers bed. These were the plants that we used in our 2013 produce garden.
- Black Krim Tomato - heirloom variety
- English Thyme
- Black Beauty Eggplant - heirloom variety
- Candy Onion
- Red Burgundy Onion
- Mr. Stripey Tomato - heirloom variety
- Yellow Bell Pepper
- Zucchini Squash
- Gretel Eggplant
- Walla Walla Onion - heirloom variety
- Gold Self Blanching Onion
- Ancho Villa (Poblano) Pepper
- Amish Paste Tomato - heirloom variety
- Pickling Cucumber
- White Cherry Tomato - (very small yellow tomatoes)
- Sweet Banana Pepper - heirloom variety
- Yellow Crookneck Squash
- Zavory Pepper
We also maintained a somewhat vertical stack of plastic pots that contained herbs, but the basil plant was the one that I used the most.
The bolded text were the plants that were most productive or we liked well.
The summer of 2013 was cooler and wetter than normal, so it may not have been a good summer for growing tomatoes.
The Black Krim Tomato was delicious. It's my favorite tasting tomato. But our plants were slow to produce, and the volume was low.
The Amish Paste Tomato, however, tasted very good, and the plants were very productive.
The Zavory Pepper had a sweet taste, and the plants produced a lot of peppers.
We liked both types of egg plants, but the Gretel produced well.
