Grapefruit Honey Ale - One Gallon Batch
Brooklyn Brew Shop - This was a recipe from their book titled Beer Making Book
- Pale ale
- brewed on Sun, May 4
- bottled on Sun, May 18. produced 8 bottles.
More notes
- during bottling, we drank some of the beer, and i disliked the taste because of the grapefruit, but DD likes grapefruit, so all is well. maybe we'll try this recipe again with a different fruit, such as the Mackinaw Peach.
- according to the book, it's suppose to have a 5.5% ABV.
- we drank a bottle on Jun 4, and it tasted fine. the strong grapefruity taste must have subsided during bottling. the fruity taste exists, but it's mild, and acceptable to me. i like the wit beer better though.
- as of Jun 15, 2014, this is an enjoyable beer. crisp and refreshing. nice for summer. it's supposedly the number one seller for the Brooklyn Brew Shop, and I can understand that. I would probably enjoy it more if it was made with an orange instead of a grapefruit.
- as the beer warms in the glass, I notice the grapefruit flavor less.
Ingredients
- peel from one scrubbed and dried grapefruit, warmed in a 250-degree oven for about 20 minutes.
- English Pale malt
- Victory malt
- Caramel 10 malt
- Caramel 20 malt
- torrified wheat
- Columbus hops
- Amarillo hops
- Belgian Candi Sugar
- honey added to the boil
- English ale yeast, Safale S-04
- honey for bottling
