Voter Turnout

September 2005 primary voter turnout info

"22 percent of registered Toledo voters cast ballots."

22%, that seems like a respectable turnout for a Sep election in today's world. It was higher than P-burg's turnout.

22% of 189,454 registered Toledo voters = 41,680 Toledoans voted on Tuesday.

According to the 2000 census, Toledo has 231,488 people age 18 and over. Now maybe all wouldn't be eligible to vote for whatever reason, I don't know. Let's say 220,000 people in Toledo are eligible to vote. That means the real voter turnout was at most 19%, which isn't much different than the reported number.

But it's a glaring stat that at least 80% of Toledoans don't care very much about politics, which may not be a bad thing. Maybe politics is severly overrated in today's world. Maybe politics is a leftover relic from a bygone era. Maybe the problem isn't with the 80% who didn't vote but with the 20% who put too much emphasis on politics. Maybe the 80% think the 20% are wasting their time and would be more productive by ignoring politics.

Miscellaneous

Jun 24, 2005 - Karyn McConnell Hancock - her bid for re-election to city council was probably harmed by this event prior to the primary:

[Hancock was] driving with an expired driver's license and expired tags. When the tow truck was called (Standard procedure) she stated she was a City Councilperson and Chief Navarre was called. The tow was cancelled.

Feb 10, 2006 - Bob McCloskey indicted - (62 Comments) - some of McCloskey's questionable dealings were known before the November 2005 election, but he was still the number two vote-getter.

Apr 23, 2006 - Toledo Blade - Copeland, Sarantou favored by party voters for Lucas County commissioner. Even though both won their city council re-election bids only months earlier, Copeland and Sarantou ran for county commissioner.

Mr. Copeland is the nephew of the late Bill Copeland, a former city councilman and former county commissioner. Some of Phil Copeland's support appears to come from voters who are associating him with his uncle. "If my uncle's name is helping me, I'm thanking him right now," Mr. Copeland said. "I'll take it any day. He had a good name, and I'm trying to keep it up. … If they think I'm Bill Copeland, that's fine with me."

In November 2005, maybe some or much of Copeland's support for council also came from people who thought they were voting for the late Bill Copeland.

Lucas County Democrat Teams - last updated in July 2007

Stainbrook takes control of Lucas County Republican Party - June 2008 - Maybe local 'A' and 'B' Republican teams will be created too.
