area forecast discussion
national weather service cleveland oh
1256 pm est fri nov 14 2014
synopsis...
lake effect snow will continue today as a trough swings across the
forecast area later today. large arctic high over the central
plains will move across the ohio valley saturday...then move off
the mid atlantic coast sunday.
&&
near term /until 6 pm this evening/...
snow continues to fall across the snow belt this morning and
advisories have been added for northern portions of the secondary
snow belt...along with lorain county. these areas already received 3-4
inches of snow overnight and will continue to see periods of snow
through tonight. cuyahoga county was also upgraded to a warning
as a heavy band set up across the county this morning. snow bands
are becoming more cellular as we head into this afternoon and expect
snow showers to become increasingly more scatted with time. many
of the high resolution models are showing snow bands continuing to
set up across cuyahoga county into tonight and this factored into
the decision to add them into the warning. accumulations for the
remainder of the afternoon will generally range from 1-3 inches
across the area...with a few locally higher amounts possible.
original discussion...
lake effect bands continue with the the best banding
across eastern cuyahoga and geauga counties. bands have shifted
slightly to the east last couple of hours as surface winds have
back slightly ahead of next trough but see no reason to believe
that conditions will change significantly before the morning
commute. as a result added geauga...lake and rest of erie
lakeshore to the lake effect snow warning and issued and advisory
for cuyahoga county for today. could see a good 2 to 5 inches
across cuyahoga county with the highest amounts across the eastern
portions of the county.
expect winds to shift more northwesterly later this morning as
surface trough moves through. upper level trough swings east of the
area this afternoon setting up very slowly improving conditions.
with winds shifting during the day do not expect mega band to set up
and sit over a given location all day. that said do expect a
widespread 3 to 6 inches across inland snowbelt in the higher
elevation.
&&
short term /6 pm this evening through sunday night/...
winds back to the west overnight as arctic high...now over the
southern plains...moves into the ohio valley. as winds shift to the
west snow bands will shift to the northern portion of the snowbelt.
moisture and instability will be on the decline...but could still
be enough for a another 2-4 inches along the lakeshore by
daybreak saturday. ridge finally moves over the area by saturday
afternoon forcing boundary layer winds to the southwest and snow
bands back onto lake erie. could still see a good inch or two
saturday before the snow finally comes to an end. models in good
agreement with arctic high shifting off the mid atlantic coast
saturday. this will allow next system to track across the area
late saturday night into sunday. track of system still in doubt as
gfs and ecmwf much further south with system than the nam.
&&
long term /monday through thursday/...
the long term begins monday with another deep upper low...aka polar
vortex...moving through the great lakes. manual graphics suggest
the accompanying arctic boundary will move through during the day
with 850mb temps -12 to -14c in the west by monday evening. monday
night into tuesday the 850mb temps drop further to -14c to -16c
while the upper trough axis remains west of the area. would expect
lake effect to be occurring monday offshore and then move inland
during the day...likely behind the arctic front when winds veer to
more westerly. with instability so extreme thunder-snow would not be
a surprise. no big change occurs tuesday. tuesday night into
wednesday surface high pressure moves through the tennessee and
lower ohio valley and upper heights begin to rise as the upper
system pulls out of the area. winds will will back eventually
taking lake effect offshore. thursday tough to judge as models are
showing differences. the ecmwf is colder for the region with
another upper low over eastern ontario and arctic air closer to the
area vs the gfs. both fairly dry however.
&&
aviation /18z friday through tuesday/...
a northwest flow through saturday morning and then as the surface
ridge moves in the flow will become southwest and any remaining
lake effect will be over the lake.
for this afternoon the snow showers were trying to decrease as
some drier air is moving in and the upper trof that caused the
snow last night moves east.
for this evening the inversion is lowering but it seems like we
will set up a connection with lake michigan and some locations in
the snow belt will get hit hard again...including cle. elsewhere
the clouds will decrease this evening.
on saturday cirrus in the morning and then some mid clouds
developing in the afternoon ahead of the next system.
outlook...non vfr likely saturday night through tuesday.
&&
marine...
will extend the small craft into saturday morning. winds and waves
will be diminishing friday night but still close to 4 feet friday
overnight. waves should diminish further saturday. until then
expect west winds with small craft advisory conditions east half
with waves 4 to 6 feet today and 3 to 5 feet tonight. winds will
remain west to southwest through tuesday. high pressure moves east
on sunday increasing the gradient. small craft conditions will
return sunday behind a surface trough or cold front with waves
reaching 3 to 5 feet. monday deep low pressure will move into the
northern lakes. a cold front associated with the low will move
through during the day. expect winds to increase to 30 knots.
gales will be possibly tuesday behind the front as the gradient
tightens further.
&&
