Old DaveNet postings

Interesting Dave Winer posts from 1994 into the early aughts.

Get to see how tech, politics, etc. changed through the years.

DaveNet was first http://scripting.com/davenet

then came Scripting http://scripting.com/archive.html

Some people say weblogs are just for teenagers to talk about cars, music and boyfriends and girlfriends. Well, they are good at that, for sure, but when a big story like HailStorm goes through the technology industry, you can see the instant publishing power of weblogs at work.

is every new publishing or content sharing app considered useful only for teenagers and young adults?

Most of the major news sites are inaccessible, but news and pictures are reaching us through email, webcams and the weblog community.

I think that it was CNN that created a "lite" version of its site to make it respond to readers.

But it's interesting what Dave said: email, webcams, and blogs.

Today, as over the two previous days with the truck terrorist attack in Nice, France and the failed military coup in Turkey, much of the "news and pictures are reaching us" occurred over Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Facebook Live and Twitter Periscope were used a lot in Turkey. For Turkey, I followed the culled posts at Reddit Live.

More from Dave's 9-11 post:

... we got first-hand reports from people who were there. There were real-time human touches that are hard to capture in a print pub with a lead time. There's power in the new communication and development medium we're mastering. Far from being dead, the Web is just getting started.

NY Times: Web Offers Both News and Comfort. "At www.scripting.com, a site normally devoted to technical discussion of Web programming, people sent in pictures of the World Trade Center buildings collapsing and reports."
