area forecast discussion
national weather service cleveland oh
622 am est thu feb 6 2014

synopsis...
large arctic high over the plains states will move slowly east
across the ohio valley/lower great lakes...then move off the mid
atlantic coast saturday...which will a allow clipper system to
move through.
&&

near term /until 6 pm this evening/...
no significant changes for the 630 update...just tweaked hourly
temps and clouds.
clouds have scattered out over much of the west...but still some
lingering flurries across the east for this morning. by this
afternoon chance of some lake effect snow showers in the east as the
850 mb temps dip to minus 16c this afternoon. even though the
surface wind shift to the southwest the 850mb winds still have more
of a westerly flow until tonight. however...conditions marginal so
only left chance pops.
&&

short term /6 pm this evening through sunday night/...
models continue to be in very good agreement on the track and timing
of next arctic system. models move the high from the plains states
today...across the ohio valley and lower great lakes friday...then
off the mid atlantic coast on saturday. that will result in a
dry...but cold forecast. lows friday and saturday morning will
likely be in the zero to minus 5 degree range.
exact timing of the next clipper system still somewhat in doubt as
short wave moves across the area this weekend. for now will go
likely pops in the west saturday afternoon and likely for entire
area saturday night. snow amount should be relatively light as
quickly as the models move the system through.
&&

long term /monday through wednesday/...
long term begins on monday with models showing a broad upper trof
across the great lakes region and high pressure at the surface to
our west...a typical setup for this winter. of course this means
cold air will be dropping out of canada into the region. will
continue with a low chance pop for leftover snow showers off the
lake monday. monday night and tuesday the high build over the
region. will have dry wx forecast with a little sun. wednesday
morning both the gfs and ecmwf have low pressure developing in the
northern glfmx and moisture moving north into the area. also models
show a short wave moving into the southeast. while the gfs is dry
across the region favor the ecmwf/hpc solution of increasing pops
across the region from tuesday night into thursday for the potential
of having a storm system moving up the appalachians. temps
moderating to below normal wednesday and thursday from much below
normal monday and tuesday.
&&

aviation /12z thursday through monday/...
forecast soundings show ample low level moisture across the area
this morning. satellite and obs show mvfr cigs from erie to cak to
aoh to tol as well as much of michigan...indiana and southern
illinois. high pressure does build toward the area through the day
and tonight but this will just manage to strengthen the inversion
trapping low level moisture across the area especially tonight.
feel that the clear areas will cloud up this morning as sunshine
causes the low levels to convect and create clouds. elsewhere
existing cloud cover will move in from the west. either way expect
ample mvfr cigs across nrn ohio and nwrn pa today and into tonight
as well.
outlook...non vfr redeveloping again on saturday continuing into
sunday monday.
&&

marine...
no headlines expected through the period with light to moderate west
to southwest flow most of the time.
