area forecast discussion...updated
national weather service cleveland oh
921 am est mon feb 10 2014

synopsis...
arctic high pressure over the plains states will move east across
the area the first half of the week. temperatures will moderate
later in the week. a cold front is expected on friday.
&&

near term /through tonight/...
see no reason why snow in the snowbelt will end in next couple of
hours so bumped up the pops to likely. would not be surprised to
see an additional inch or two today.
original early morning discussion...
pretty strong jet just to our south and weak short waves rippling
along in the flow...one weak short wave for this afternoon and one
tonight. arctic high pressure over the plains states is spreading
east. does not take much to squeeze out flurries... almost
anywhere but most likely ne oh/nw pa. even though lake erie is
mostly ice covered...enough heat and moisture flux available to
fuel additional flurries/snow showers. the fluffy stuff...but
someone in the snowbelt could squeeze out an inch or two.
temperatures will not rise much today with the cold advection
although a little sunshine will help...especially across nw ohio.
temperatures tonight combined with the wind will make for border
line wind chill advisory conditions across nw ohio. the wind will be
decreasing to about 4-5 knots later tonight and may become light
enough (5 mph or below) to not require an advisory. given the
uncertainty and the cold winter we have had... will not post an
advisory for such a marginal situation yet and will let the day
shift take a look at it. forecast temps tonight will be below
guidance in most areas given the arctic air and snow cover but
above guidance near the lake erie lakeshore with the west
northwest flow.
&&

short term /tuesday through thursday night/...
by tuesday we should have enough stable and dry arctic air that
any remaining flurries should dry up. the surface high should
slide by tuesday night with a light return flow on wednesday. the
ecmwf remains the farthest west with the east coast low on
thursday but all of the activity should remain well east of the
forecast area. some high and mid clouds are likely thursday as
warm advection increases. temperatures should begin to moderate
wednesday and thursday but will not warm the forecast up too
quickly. the gradient remains light and with deep snow cover and
arctic high pressure we will likely see temperatures below
guidance especially at night.
&&

long term /friday through sunday/...
active weather pattern returns for the end of the week as a series
of shortwave troughs move through the great lakes region. at 5-7
days out...confidence is below normal in models being able to
resolve these features well enough to accurately forecast chances of
snow from friday to sunday. at this time...models are showing either
a clipper moving across the great lakes or a weak wave traversing
the ohio valley on friday...either of which warrant a chance of
light snow in the forecast. a secondary low will slide southeast
across the ohio valley on saturday night...bringing another chance
of snow. given the uncertainty...will carry a chance of snow through
the weekend with a continuation of below normal temperatures.
&&

aviation /12z monday through friday/...
skies range from partly cloudy across nw ohio to overcast with
flurries or scattered light snow showers in ne ohio/nw pa. will hold
onto some snow with mvfr visibilities at eri this morning although
it could linger longer. can not rule a few snow showers at
yng/cle but overall trend will be towards less snow today as drier
air spreads in from the west beneath building high pressure.
ceilings will generally be vfr although a few patches of ifr have
started to develop in the last hour and will be around until
mixing increases later this morning. some enhancement is expected
to the cloud field with diurnal heating today...with clouds
attempting to clear from west to east overnight. light westerly
winds of 5 to 10 knots tonight...will drop to 5 knots or less most
sites tonight.
outlook...non-vfr may redevelop late thursday and continue
through friday.
&&

marine...
high pressure over the northern plains will build east across the
great lakes region through tuesday...then to new england on
wednesday. westerly winds of 10-15 knots today will fall below 10
knots tonight and remain light into thursday. southerly winds will
increase on thursday night and friday as an alberta clipper passes
just north of lake erie.
&&

cle watches/warnings/advisories...
oh...none.
pa...none.
marine...none.
