area forecast discussion
national weather service cleveland oh
905 am est thu feb 13 2014

synopsis...
weak high pressure will be across the area today and a clipper
will pass north of lake erie on friday...dragging cold front
across the region. meanwhile another disturbance will be passing
south of the area across kentucky. a trough will linger across the
eastern great lakes through saturday. the next weak disturbance
will move from the midwest to the upper ohio valley saturday
night.
&&

near term /until 6 pm this evening/...
area wedged between two systems today with weak high pressure
overhead. for the afternoon...cirrus shield from east coast system
expected to start pulling out to the east...and the arrival from the
west of high and mid clouds from the next system upstream. there
will be peeks of sun...but it will be limited. overall...the west
should see the most sunshine which will help to average out the high
temps this afternoon. not as big of a temp difference from location
to location as yesterday.
&&

short term /6 pm this evening through sunday night/...
a relatively quiet stretch although temperatures will still be
running below normal. a clipper is advertised to pass north of the
area on friday. meanwhile a weak upper disturbance will slide
across the lower ohio valley and kentucky. little in the way of
moisture across the local area with the passage of the upper
trough. have lowered the precip chances. most of the area may be
dry or just have some flurries. will continue with low chances for
actual light accumulating snow. somewhat colder air will move
back in with this system leaving the weekend in the upper teens to
mid 20s for highs. temperatures are marginal for any help from the
lake for friday night and saturday and yesterdays satellite
picture showing quite solid ice cover. did not change pops yet.
elsewhere a ridge of high pressure will be working into the area
for friday night and saturday. cool but fair weather. an upper
disturbance moves quickly across the area saturday night and this
may bring some light snow accumulations. high pressure builds over
the great lakes sunday. by sunday night western portions of the
area may begin to feel the effects of warm air advection ahead of
a warmer system for early next work week.
&&

long term /monday through wednesday/...
models are in much better agreement on the track of low pressure
north of lake erie on monday into tuesday. this should allow more of
the region to switch over to all rain by monday afternoon. we still
may end up with a mix of rain and snow monday night into tuesday
morning as temperatures dip in the wake of a cold front that looks
to be east of the area by sunrise on tuesday. have leaned toward the
slightly slower ecmwf solution. there may be a brief period of lake
effect snow showers on tuesday but high pressure should move in fast
enough to end it tuesday night.
it will be warmer monday into tuesday with highs in the 30s to
around 40 anticipated. as southerly winds increase wednesday into
thursday highs will surge into the 40s with some 50s possible by
thursday.
the warmth and rainfall will raise concerns near any of the rivers
and creeks across the region. we will continue to monitor the
potential for any ice jam flooding over the next week.
&&

aviation /12z thursday through monday/...
the region is between a strong area of low pressure near the east
coast and a clipper storm system currently moving into the upper
great lakes. the region will see variable amounts of middle and
high level cloud cover through the day. northeast to east winds
this morning will become south to southwest during the evening and
into the overnight. as a weak cold front passes toward sunrise on
friday westerly winds will become gusty. gusts may reach 20 knots.
ceilings will lower near and in the wake of the frontal boundary
but not confident that they will dip to mvfr levels. for now have
gone low end vfr. will also need to monitor for some light snow
near or shortly after 12z on friday. chances too low to mention at
this time.
outlook...non-vfr possible friday through sunday.
&&

marine...
a series of weak clipper storm systems will track across the region
today through saturday night. the strongest piece of jet energy will
pass on friday with westerly winds increasing in the wake of a cold
front. winds will likely increase to around 30 knots friday
afternoon into early saturday. high pressure will then increase its
influence over the lake into sunday. as the high moves off to the
east sunday night it will allow for increasing southerly winds on
monday.
