Shoulder Bag Ideas

Other small shoulder bags that I use:

  • leather. purchased in March 2012 at a craft show at the Claire, MI St. Patrick's Day festival. crafted by a person who lives in Michigan.
    • landscape design
    • 6.75 in wide
    • 4.75 in high
    • 2.50 in deep
    • 3-piece construction:
      • small front rectangle
      • u-shaped piece for sides and bottom
      • larger rectangle that covers the back and the fold-over flap that stretches to the bottom of the front
    • magnetic button flap snaps to bottom front.
  • green canvas medic bag purchased at Army-Navy Surplus store
    • landscape design
    • 12.5 in wide
    • 10.50 in high
    • 3.25 in deep
    • 3-piece construction
      • front, bottom, back, and fold-over flap is one piece.
      • left side
      • right side
    • 4th and 5th pieces would be the strap, which is 1.50 in wide and attached via an adjustable buckle-type metal piece.
    • the front flap folds over 50% down the front.
    • front flap fastens to front with two leather buckles.
  • green canvas ammo bag purchased online from an Army-Navy Surplus type of store
    • landscape design
    • 10.00 in wide
    • 7.75 in high
    • 4.00 in deep
    • 3-piece construction
      • front
      • sides - u-shaped
      • back and fold-over front flap
    • 4th piece would be strap that is adjustable with a metal, buckle-type of device. but it appears to be only one-piece strap instead of 2-piece like with the medic bag.
    • strap is 1.50 in wide.
    • front flap folds over about 50% down the front and fastens via a buckle.
    • two pockets on the front.

To hold a basic field guide or paperback book, the shoulder bag needs to be at least 8 to 9 inches wide in landscape design.

Needs to be about 10 inches wide to hold the larger version of the iPad.

To hold two Kaufman Field Guides back to back, the field bag needs to be at least 2 inches deep.

  • My Shoulder Bag Idea
    • I planned to make a two-piece construction:
      • front, bottom, back, and fold-over front flap.
      • strap that would double as the sides.
    • a four-piece option would be:
      • front
      • back and front fold-over flap
      • sides and bottom, u-shaped
      • strap that connects to the sides.
    • the four-piece idea or separating the strap from the reset of the field bag would allow for a narrow strap of say 1.5 to 2.0 inches wide while make the depth of the bag larger, like 3 to 4 inches deep.

If I wanted to hold a water bottle, then I would probably need a field bag deeper than 2 inches.

A strap that is 3 inches wide may be too uncomfortable. I think the strap will need to have a max width of 1.5 to 2.0 inches.

It would be nice to round the corners of the front flap part. The rest of the crochet can have straight edges.

I plan to single-crochet a rectangle to test strength or stretchiness. I would prefer
