In the Great Lakes region, November might be the best month for a weather dork.
In Toledo on Nov 11, 2014, our high temp reached 64 degrees. A week later on Nov 18, our high temp was 18. The normal high temp for Nov 18 is 49 degrees.
A year ago on Nov 17, 2013, parts of the Midwest experienced a tornado outbreak, including a couple tornadoes in the Toledo area. This year on Nov 16, we received our first official, measurable snowfall. On Sunday, it snowed a little over two inches in the city. Today, it snowed just under an inch in Toledo.
Since late last week, the snow belt areas around the Great Lakes have been enjoying some fine lake effect action with accumulations measured in feet.
Apparently, yesterday, Nov 18, 2014 was the coldest November day experienced in the U.S. since 1976. Toledo Express Airport recorded a low temp of 9 degrees, which was one degree away from the record set in 1959.
The average temperature over the contiguous U.S. fell to a frigid 19.4 degrees F. at 7 a.m. according to a dataset used by forecasters. All 50 U.S. states, including Hawaii, recorded a low temperature at or below 32 degrees.
For a second straight day, 50 percent of the Lower 48 was covered in snow, the most in the relatively short record (dating back to 2003).
On Oct 16, 2014, NOAA issued its Winter Outlook for 2014-2015
Nov 16 - 22, 2014 is Winter Safety Awareness Week.
I think this week's snow, wind, and cold has made us aware of winter.
Approximately normal temps are still being predicted for this Sunday and Monday.
