area forecast discussion
national weather service cleveland oh
705 am edt tue may 10 2016
synopsis...
high pressure over ontario will remain strong enough into the
evening to keep a warm front near the ohio river valley. the front
will move north of lake erie by early thursday as low pressure
moves into the western great lakes. a cold front will cross the
area thursday evening into early friday.
&&
near term /until 6 pm this evening/...
showers continue to decrease in coverage as they drift to the
northeast. will likely see scattered or less coverage by mid
morning then ramping back up during the afternoon with the
approaching upper level energy.
previous discussion...
high pressure over ontario will remain strong enough into the
evening to keep a warm front near the ohio river valley. however
there is enough lift north of the boundary to generate some light
rain across the southwestern half of the county warning area.
drier air over ne ohio into nw pa has made it difficult for the
rainfall to spread any further than a cleveland to canton line.
current thinking is that showers will decrease in coverage as it
moves into the drier airmass. there will not be that much rainfall
as it moves into nw pa but did go with chance pops.
at some point late this morning into early afternoon it appears
there will be a lull in the shower activity as we await a piece of
jet energy that will track into southern ohio. this should allow
for the development of showers over indiana and southwestern ohio
to then track into northern ohio. at this point we have gone with
the best chances of showers for the evening commute. thunder
chances look to be minimal but have placed an isolated mention for
portions of the region.
cloud cover will impact highs again today. most locations are
starting out a bit warmer than yesterday morning. this should
allow many locations to reach the upper 50s to upper 60s. coolest
near the lakeshore where northeast winds off the cooler water will
keep highs in the lower to mid 50s.
&&
short term /6 pm this evening through friday night/...
warm front will be near the southern portion of the county
warning area by wednesday afternoon. the proximity of the front
and ripples of energy moving across the area will keep rain
chances in the forecast tonight through wednesday night. daytime
heating on wednesday will enhance the shower development with
some isolated thunder possible...especially across the southern
half of the area. the warm front should lift north of lake erie
wednesday night as low pressure passes over the western great
lakes. better instability will spread across the region ahead of a
cold front on thursday so expect a more widespread chance of
thunderstorms. a few of them may become stronger for the afternoon
and evening. cloud cover may end up limiting the strength of the
storms enough to keep the severe mention out of the hwo for now.
after morning showers across the east friday morning it appears
that it will be dry. this will be short lived as the next upper
level trough digs into the central great lakes friday night. so
after midnight friday night the rain chances will once again
increase.
warmer wednesday but still some uncertainty about the strength of
the warm advection. if the cloud cover can thin enough for a few
peeks of sunshine highs will warm into the 70s away from lake
erie. thursday will be the warmest day of the short term with all
locations warming into the 70s...even along the lakeshore. cooler
on friday in the wake of the cold front with highs very close to
seasonal averages.
&&
long term /saturday through monday/...
both models continue to push next cold front across the area
saturday morning. left some lingering showers in the east
saturday morning...moving east of the area during the afternoon.
by 00z the 850mb temps dip to -2c...but by then the moisture has
moved east of the area. dry conditions return saturday night into
sunday as a ridge of high pressure moves across the upper ohio
valley. the high moves off the mid atlantic coast sunday evening
allowing another cold front to move across the area sunday night.
showing limited moisture so left slight chance pops going sunday
night into monday.
