morning. widespread blowing and drifting snow will occur as the
winds gust and near blizzard conditions are likely for a time in

snowfall will be minimal...an inch or two for northeast ohio and
northwest pennsylvania...with little or no accumulation for
northwest ohio. temperatures will fall all day and by mid day or

the national weather service in cleveland has cancelled the wind
chill watch.

• winds...west winds of 15 to 25 mph today. the most common gusts
  will be between 30 and 40 mph this morning with a few isolated
  higher gusts. by mid morning these gusts will be subsiding. wind
  will remain out of the west tonight at 15 to 20 mph and then
  shift southwest for tuesday to between 10 and 20 mph.

• visibilities...will be a quarter mile or less at times in snow
  and blowing snow early this morning...when the winds are at
  their strongest. near blizzard conditions will be likely.
  visibility will improve greatly by mid morning.

• accumulations...little or no additional snow accumulation.
  blowing and drifting snow will be significant...especially this
  morning.

• temperatures...will continue to fall today...ending up around
  zero by evening. lows monday night and tuesday night will be 10
  below to 15 degrees below zero.

• wind chill readings...wind chills readings of 10 to 15 degrees
  below zero can be expected by midday or early afternoon. by
  evening those values will range from 15 to 25 degree below zero.
  from monday night through wednesday morning wind chills will
  likely be between 20 and 30 below zero with the current forecast

synopsis...
bitterly cold high pressure will be building into the ohio valley
today through wednesday. this high will shift east on thursday and
allow a cold front to near the area thursday night or friday. the
coldest temperatures will be from today through wednesday...with
some moderation by the end of the week.
&&

near term /until 6 pm this evening/...
early morning update...improvement occurring. snow pulling out and
what is left is much lighter. winds starting to subside out
west...gusts have become more intermittent. only made minor tweaks
to the forecast for today.
previous...a lot to consider this morning. cold front is through
the area...temperatures are falling...winds are blowing...and the
main precipitation shield will be pulling out over the next few
hours. have some lake effect bands from lake michigan making their
way into nw ohio too. winds at their worst now with a strong
surface pressure rise/fall couplet. by mid morning gusts closer to
30 mph...instead of 40 mph. this has caused some areas of
blowing/drifting snow west of i-71 early this morning per reports
received...but wide open area airports still predominately
reporting visibilities that are between 1 and 6+ miles. will
continue with winter weather advisory mainly for this
blowing/drifting and the temporary reductions in visibility under
a mile in bursts of snow. little or no snow accumulations
west...and inch or two east.
wind chill advisory kicks in immediately after the winter weather
advisory ends. by midday or early afternoon wind chill readings
will have reached -10 to -15 degrees.
linger some snow chances into the afternoon for lorain eastward
across the snowbelt. it will be much drier that the other day so
any lake effect should be minimal. of course unsure of where any
breaks in the ice may be.
by 6 pm temperatures will have fallen to near zero.

short term /6 pm this evening through thursday night/...
confidence continues for the wind chill warning for tonight into
early tuesday morning. gradient will still be tight between high
pressure building into the ohio valley and low pressure over
hudson bay. have stuck with forecast low temperatures for a large
portion of the area between -5 and -14 degrees. so wind chills
will dip as low as -30. this airmass is not quite as cold as the
one from jan 6/7...but the winds tonight will not be as
strong either...so potential there to still get those -10 degree
lows. have lowered precip chance for any lake effect across far ne
oh/nw pa tonight...again because it is so dry this time around. by
tuesday morning winds begin to back to the southwest too. dry
elsewhere for tuesday. highs around zero.
high pressure centered over the ohio valley by tuesday night. have
upgraded the wind chill watch to a warning...as the likelihood of
hitting -25 wind chill is good and also for simplicity sake. but
that is with current forecast as is. some concern that with the
high nearby winds may be a tad lighter and that would place us in
advisory criteria instead. low temps have to be on target
too...and those will be dependent on the wind too. do have a
trough crossing the great lakes...so this may keep the wind up
just enough.
high shifts to our southeast by wednesday evening. temperatures
should reach double digits wednesday. a fast moving low is still
progged to move across southern canada thursday into friday. a
cold front trailing this low will kick off some light snow. this
precip should reach nw oh late in the day thursday and then move
east across the remaining areas on thursday night. will stick with
chance pops for now but expect that we will eventually need likely
wording.

long term /friday through sunday/...
have made only minor changes to the long term this morning. some
lingering lake effect is possible east of kcle on friday. low
pressure will move up the ohio valley on friday night and saturday
morning. temps will be warming by then but it should remain cold
enough for all snow. if this plays out like the models forecast
much of the area could see a few inches of snow...possibly enough
for advisories. will try to dry things out sunday as high pressure
builds in. have used a blend of guidance temps during the period.

aviation /12z monday through friday/...
the worst should be over as the arctic front has pushed east of
the area. most of the snow is gone and only expecting a few more
hours of light snow in the east. cigs for the most part remain vfr
except in the heavier snow. do not anticipate cigs to lower from
current values. some clearing is possible over the west half this
morning but cold air advection clouds should develop later on.
expect bkn cigs to gradually lift this afternoon and then become
sct in the west toward evening. gusty west winds will continue to
come down a knot or two per hour. peak gusts should be in the 25
to 30 knot range by mid morning and in the low to mid 20s by midday.
the gustiness should go away toward evening.
outlook...non vfr mainly in the snow belt tuesday.

marine...
for the nearshore waters...ice coverage is a big factor...but winds
are expected to linger around high end small craft criteria. the
clipper system exiting the region at the time of this issuance was
being followed by a brisk southwest wind with gusts in the mid to
upper 20kt range through early evening. look for a shift to the west
as a arctic front approaches. the front will have impressive
pressure rises with strong cold air advection. the conditions across
the lake will be conditionally unstable for any open waters...which
will support gale force gusts with sustained speeds remaining
elevated in the 25 to 30 kt range. if there is stronger winds
aloft...the gale warning may needed for at least a portion of the
lake. high pressure will build across the ohio valley monday night
into tuesday morning...and the instability and extremely cold air
will support breezy but below gale force winds.

high pressure over the plains will spread up the ohio valley tonight
through wednesday then shift to the east coast thursday. a cold
front will move east into the area friday and stall as a wave of low
pressure moves along the front through the area friday night and
saturday.

near term /until 6 am tuesday/...
since wind chills should drop below minus 25 tonight and then tend
to stay around or below minus 25 most of the time until midday wed
so will just go with a wind chill warning for the whole time to keep
things less confusing.
the arctic flow across the lake should continue to provide for a
threat for light lake effect shsn tonight. accumulation should be an
inch or less. scattered flurries possible on the fringes of the core
snowbelt. winds gusting to 30 mph may produce a little blowing snow
at times early this evening.

northern plains into the great lakes. however the timing of the
pieces of energy moving through the trough differ in each model.
ended up with a much longer period of chance pops in the grids than

temperatures will moderate with highs ranging from the upper 20s to
the lower to middle 30s.

region through the afternoon. there still may be a brief ifr lake
effect snow shower for locations north of a line from kcle to kyng
into early evening. vfr conditions should spread across the

tonight with winds shifting to the southwest and decreasing. a
couple weak frontal boundaries will cross the lake...one on

  25 mph this evening and during the day tuesday.

  tonight and again tuesday night. highs tuesday only zero to 5

precautionary/preparedness actions...

if you will be outdoors use common sense and dress warmly...in
layers...making sure that all exposed skin is covered. avoid
prolonged exposure to the cold...if possible to prevent frostbite
and hypothermia.

a wind chill warning is issued when a strong wind will combine
with cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for
exposed skin. the wind will make it feel like it is 25 degrees
below zero or colder for several hours. a wind chill advisory is
issued when it is expected to feel like -10 to -24 degrees.

synopsis...
high pressure over the plains will spread up the ohio valley tonight
through wednesday then shift to the east coast thursday. a cold
front will move east into the area friday and stall as a wave of low
pressure moves along the front through the area friday night and
saturday.

near term /through tuesday/...
snow band continues across lake...ashtabula and erie counties at
this time. latest satellite imagery shows cloud tops cooling and
they are also cooling back over michigan as well. this means the
snow band will likely continue for a while. flow will become
slightly more northwest this evening and will push the band
further inland. decided to go with a winter weather advisory for
ashtabula and erie counties for the combination of snow and
blowing snow. advisory will go until about 4 am. received a report
from the 911 center in erie pa of 2 to 4 inches so far across
their area since 4 pm this afternoon.
previous discussion...
since wind chills should drop below minus 25 tonight and then tend
to stay around or below minus 25 most of the time until midday wed
so will just go with a wind chill warning for the whole time to keep
things less confusing.
the arctic flow across the lake should continue to provide for a
threat for light lake effect shsn tonight. accumulation should be an
inch or less. scattered flurries possible on the fringes of the core
snowbelt. winds gusting to 30 mph may produce a little blowing snow
at times early this evening.
