A blast from the past:
2007 - Toledo Talk - Toledo Wi-Fi Debate - pros and cons
Excerpt:
Next-gen wireless technology is "right around the corner," which could make WiFi irrelevant.
From the July 2007 Toronto Star article referenced in the 2007 Toledo Talk post:
And it makes little sense to invest in the [WiFi] technology when its next incarnation, WiMax, is what the techies are buzzing about.WiMax works much like WiFi, but can cover kilometres instead of metres and offer exponentially faster download times.
"I simply cannot comprehend why anyone would build a metropolitan WiFi network when WiMax is right around the corner, unless they're looking for a tax loss," Robinson said.
A little further back to show what it was like in the olden days ...
October 2003 Toledo Talk post titled WiFi in Toledo that pointed to a Blade story
According to the WiFi Alliance, a nonprofit international association formed to certify wireless network products based on a technical standard, there are now at least nine hot spots, locations where wireless high speed Internet connections will work, in and around the Toledo area. They include five restaurants, two hotels, Toledo Express Airport, and the SeaGate Convention Centre."Demand for WiFi in the Toledo area has been somewhat sparse but only because so many people are used to wired or dial-up connections, cable modems, or DSL service."
