"... the obituaries completely disappear at night. Why the gap at night?"
I read this thread last night, and I viewed the obits page, and I noticed that the obits are published at another site and not at the ToledoBlade.com.
http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/toledoblade
Since legacy.com hosts the content, maybe a delay exists when new info is pushed to the site or when legacy.com is updated. Paul will figure that out.
"I take home delivery of The Blade and also read the online edition. Usually on the iPad but occasionally on the PC - the looks are completely different between the two online formats."
Your browser sends info to the server that allows the server to determine what type of device or screen size that you are using, and then the server returns the appropriate type of website. It requires a publisher to maintain at least two types of websites.
On the desktop/laptop, you receive:
http://www.toledoblade.com
On a mobile device, you receive:
http://m.toledoblade.com
You can view the Blade's mobile version on your desktop/laptop too.
When you are directed to legacy.com for the obits, you will see this URL on your mobile device:
http://m.legacy.com/obituaries/toledoblade
When you try to view the mobile version of legacy.com on your desktop/laptop, the server redirects you back to the desktop/laptop version.
I think that maintaining two or more distinct versions of a website for multiple devices is a bit old-school. Personally, I prefer one responsively-designed website that automatically adjusts to any screen size, which will keep a familiar feel across desktop, laptop, tablet, phone, shoe, etc.
For example, these smaller sites (blogs) that I like to read are responsive. You can test by viewing the sites on your desktop/laptop and then resizing your browser.
But redesigning an older web server architecture to be responsive can take a lot of work, especially for a large publisher like the Blade.
