The web as a platform

Lengthy but interesting post ... http://techcrunch.com/2014/05/16/the-once-and-future-web-platform/

... written by Michael Bleigh, the CEO/Cofounder of static web hosting platform-as-a-service Divshot.

"The web as a platform is easier to learn and lets developers do more faster than any other platform"

Interesting blog and article page designs

Similar to Medium.com, which may or may not be good to copy, like so many other bloggers have done, but the fact is for me, this style of article page is comfortable to read on multiple devices.

The homepage is dead

May 15, 2014 - qz.com - The homepage is dead, and the social web has won—even at the New York Times

People who used RSS readers long ago would have accessed homepages less often.

But obviously, socialmedia's popularity since 2007 has contributed the most to users not accessing homepages directly.

This is another reason why media companies should simplify their homepages, instead of cluttering them into an indiscernible mess.

Buying local eggs

We buy eggs from farmers who sell at the Toledo Farmers Market.

And we buy eggs from the Phoenix Earth Food Co-op.

Co-op eggs come from The McVay Family Farm in N. Fayette, OH, which is located in western Fulton County. These eggs have a tasty, orange yolk. Multiple egg shell colors may exist in each carton. Brown, white, and green egg shells.

Bottling our Imperial Stout

JP came over to help us bottle our first batch of beer, which we brewed at JP's brew party on Sun, Mar 30, 2014.

During the teaching and bottling process that involves a lot of setup and cleaning, we sampled beers that DD and I bought the day before at The Andersons, and I made my Neapolitan-style pizza with some fresh spelt flour added to the crust.

Our 2013 produce garden plants

In 2012, I reluctantly replaced my swamp milkweed bed with a small, produce garden. In 2013, I expanded the garden by removing more lawn and removing some flowers from our main Oak Openings native flowers bed. These were the plants that we used in our 2013 produce garden.

May 3, 2014 notes about our backyard Hermit Thrush

"You can observe a lot just by watching." - Yogi Berra

(On Sat, May 3, I wrote this info down in my Field Notes notebook, but I don't think that I recorded it at JotHut.)

At 10:47 a.m., I observed a Hermit Thrush foraging on our back lawn, near the middle oval flower bed, and it used the "shaky leg" foraging technique.

When a HETH forages on the lawn or leaf litter, it will sometimes vertically vibrate one leg that, I assume, is done to flush insects from the ground, so that the HETH can snatch the insects out of the air.

The leg vibration is barely noticeable, and it requires focused observation because it seems that most of the time, this shaky leg foraging technique is not used. Maybe it depends upon how much insect activity is already occurring.
