May 2013 - Medium.com post - The Facebook experiment has failed. Let’s go back.

We need to go back to smaller communities. Where people aren’t lost in the mediocre averages of large networks. That’s where ideas flourish.

Designing websites for readers and writers

"Thankfully, we're starting to see something of a Renaissance. Comment-forms are dropping off blogs like vestigial tails. Text sizes are increasing yearly, and sites are being stripped and whitewashed, with most of their old cruft gone without a trace. The medium is starting to disappear again." - Content as Medium by Matt Gemmell

"Strip away the images and gradients and vectors from even the fanciest web page, and you'll find that the web is mostly words." - The CODE Keyboard by Jeff Atwood

"But the most powerful tool on the web is still words. At its heart, web design should be about words." - Words by Justin Jackson

"Good design begins with content. Great copy will help a design shine. A stellar design will only get you so far if the content is lacking." - Good Writing and Editing Is Part of Great Design

Toledo area suburban sprawl

The greenspace in Lucas County is being chewed up well. Note the 16-year change between '81 and '97 in the images below. Obviously, we have less greenspace 16 years later.

The images below would make sense if our population was growing. But our county's population has declined over the past 30 to 40 years while the amount of developed land has more than doubled. I'm assuming that means a lot of vacant properties exists in Toledo.

Sketching out the ignore user feature at Toledo Talk

Completed on May 22, 2013, the same day I created this list of things to do. It took about three hours to sketch out the ideas and then incrementally build and test in small chunks. The process was faster and and easier than expected.

Some Toledo Talk users requested ability to ignore or hide comments posted by specific users.

It's not exactly something I want to implement. I believe the best ignore feature is to simply overlook the comment or thread.

But I'll try to implement this feature, although it could be something that might contribute to the slow demise of a small message board like Toledo Talk.

2013 Toledo mayoral candidate websites

May 16, 2013, Tom Troy blog post Candidates for mayor announce new Web sites

From Troy's post, I added Joe McNamara's website link to the top of this thread.

I still don't see a website for libertarian candidate Michael Konwinski. Maybe that's the libertarian philosophy. Don't host your content on someone else's servers.

Websites and social media sites for the 2013 Toledo mayoral candidates that I'm aware of:

Obnoxious bird photographers disrupt birdwatchers viewing the rare Kirtland's Warbler

On Wednesday, May 15, 2013, three Kirtland's Warblers (KIWA) were seen at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area. Two were seen on the east beach and one on the west beach.

KIWA like to nest on sandy soil under young, scrubby jack pines, especially in central Michigan. In migration, birds sometimes like to forage in habitat that is similar to their nesting grounds.

The beaches at Magee Marsh contain short, scrubby vegetation. Over the years, the beaches have been the best places to see this rare songbird in migration. It winters in the Bahamas, so its route to central Michigan takes it through northwest Ohio.

People can certainly see this bird on its nesting grounds, but seeing one in migration is a rare treat. Magee Marsh is probably the best place in the country to see a KIWA in migration.

Dieter Rams - Ten principles for good design

Back in the late 1970s, Dieter Rams was becoming increasingly concerned by the state of the world around him – “an impenetrable confusion of forms, colours and noises.” Aware that he was a significant contributor to that world, he asked himself an important question: is my design good design?

As good design cannot be measured in a finite way he set about expressing the ten most important principles for what he considered was good design. (Sometimes they are referred as the ‘Ten commandments’.)

Here they are.

2003 ToledoTalk.com posts about the Detroit Tigers

(This post was originally created in May 2013.)

The 2003 Detroit Tigers were the worst team in Major League Baseball history. The Tigers went 43-119.

The 1962 expansion NY Mets lost 120 games, which is the record. But that Mets team gets a pass because it was their first year in the league.

Thus far in the 2013 season, the Houston Astros are the worst team in MLB with a record of 8-24, which is a .250 winning percentage. The Astros are 12.5 games out of first place.

The Astros were a National League team for a long time, but now they are in the American League.

Some think this year's Astros team may top the '62 Mets in losses. I think the Toledo Mud Hens payroll is higher than the lowly Astros.

Anyway, this year's Astros reminded me of the 2003 Tigers.

Ohio River fishing - April 29, 2013

Dad and I fished Ohio River yesterday aft and eve. We caught several fish: sauger, smallmouth bass, white bass, and a channel catfish. We used plastic grubs on lead heads.

Online Communities

(My early 2012 comment at ToledoTalk.com.)

I believe Orkut was Google's first attempt at social networking several years ago. It didn't take off here, but it got popular elsewhere, like South America.

LiveJournal was/is an early blogging network that began around 2000. Early last decade, it was one of the most popular "social" sites. To help LJ's performance, LJ's creator, Brad Fitzpatrick, also created memcached, which still gets implemented by many Web services today.

Stack Overflow is popular among geeks. It's a good source for answers to tech questions. For me, the site appears often in Google search results.

I've been following Quora for a few years. Some early Facebook employees created Quora. It began as a Q&A site for anything. Besides Q&A, it now includes other functions, such as blogging. You can follow users, questions, and topics. Quora could be perceived as being somewhat complicated or hard to understand how it works, but I like it okay. It requires a user to invest a little time checking it out.
