Ten Mile Creek Farm - Community Supported Agriculture

(My ToledoTalk.com post from 2007. We were members of the Shared Legacy Farms CSA from 2008 through 2012. Great food produced by great people, but the amount of food became too much for the two of us. We buy produce from local farmers markets, including Kurt from Shared Legacy, and we maintain our own small garden.)

Description about a September 17, 2007 Metroparks Toledo field trip titled Salsa and Sustainability :

What does Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) mean? Tour the Ten Mile Creek Farm farm with locally active CSA farmer Robin Parker and see how sustainable farming methods protect our water and soils while providing the best quality local produce. Taste the salsa, fresh picked and organic!

Driving in a real Toledo winter

( my Jan 1, 2014 comment in this ToledoTalk.com thread about roads not being maintained well during a snowstorm. )

When I walked the dog this afternoon, I noticed that Douglas Rd was mostly clear and slushy wet, so that stretch of road received heavy attention. Even Bowen Rd through the neighborhood was mostly clear and wet. But hey, the 1%'ers get special treatment.

Temps for the past 24 hours have remained in the teens. The snow continues to fall. The snow is extremely fine-grain, lightweight, and powdery. I don't know if those dynamics work against the snow removers any more than a heavy, wet snow with temps around 30 degrees.

It's probably going to be tough for the snow removal crews over the next couple days.

We don't need cable and satellite TV

( my Jan 1, 2014 comments in a ToledoTalk.com thread about the dispute between Block Communications and WNWO )

I watched last Sunday's Eagles-Cowboys game just fine on WNWO, using a TV with an over-the-air antenna. We're able to watch enough NFL and PBS that we don't need cable nor satellite TV. The rest of our limited TV viewing is done with Roku or DvDs. For us, it makes no sense to have cable/satellite TV, mostly because we don't have the time nor the interest in watching (wasting time) that much television.

Cleveland Browns - An Unstable Sports Franchise

Thoughts after the 2013 NFL season.

The number of Super Bowl appearances for the Browns: zero.

For the 2014 season, the Browns will have its 3rd head coach in 3 years.

Now compare Cleveland to two of the Browns' divisional opponents: the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cooking a rib roast

Dec 2015

Placed order on Dec 19 or so. At Zavotski's. 12-pounder. Bone-in. Not pre-cut. Total cost was $140.00. It was already thawed as usual. Places in frig until time to prep. Finished prep and placed into room-temp oven at 12:25 am on Dec 25. I coated roast with a mix of 10 tablespoons of fresh ground black pepper corns and 2 tablespoons of Dave's kosher salt. I did not coat the underside close to the bones.

For our 2012 and 2013 Christmas day dinners, we cooked a rib roast, which is also known as prime rib. It's expensive, but it's easy to cook, and it's delicious. And since it's for family, it's worthwhile.
