NYC Feb 2014 Trip Planning Notes

Notes for planning a 4-day, 3-night long weekend trip to New York City, which will focus on art and food in Manhattan.

Originally, our flight was scheduled to leave Detroit at 6:00 a.m. on Fri, Feb 21, 2014, but it got delayed three times, and then the flight was canceled after we boarded the plane around 8:00 a.m. Dense fog in New York City forced the cancellation. So we got refunds for our flight and hotel, and we'll reschedule for another time.

More thoughts about journalism - Feb 2014

(My Feb 15, 2014 proposed comment that I planned to post in this ToledoTalk.com thread, but I never did. I wrote this as a response to the comment below.)

"Because journalism, as we know it may POSSIBLY disappear." - TT user paulhem

If you are referring to articles that need to meet a deadline in order to be printed in the next day's paper, then yes, that paradigm will disappear, and in my opinion, it should have disappeared already.

Journalism, however, will not disappear. 15 years ago, the newspaper industry was slow to react and innovate, and it got burned. Today, old media companies are trying to innovate, and new media startups are forming. Some ideas have failed, but that's to be expected. It may take another 5 to 10 years before the industry learns what works in a sustainable manner, especially at the local level.

But in my opinion, it's an exciting time to be a journalist whether it be a student in high school or college or a journalist with 30-plus years experience. The current and future hardware and software technologies make this a fascinating time to be a writer.

Toledo area shopping - Sat, Feb 15, 2014

Sunny day. Clear, bright blue sky. Little wind.

We left home around 11:00 a.m. with temps approx 12 to 15 degrees. We got home at about 4:00 p.m. Still sunny. Temps around 20 degrees. Nice day. Maybe one of the last real winter days for a while.

We contributed to the local economy by shopping at:

Toledo Neighborhoods

Dozens of neighborhood names exist in Toledo. Some are well-known and well-defined while others maybe obscure. Some neighborhood boundaries overlap.

Journalist baffled by Quartz.com design

Feb 11, 2014 story titled Does it matter that mobile-native Quartz has a mobile-minority audience?

The answer is "No," since Quartz is an 18-month-old digital media startup, and responsive web design only began its popularity surge in 2011. The change toward a mostly mobile world is still in its infancy. Innovation is ongoing. User trends change rapidly. Two years ago, tablets were expected to be the devices, used to consume longform articles, but that may not be the case today.

This story would have merit if it was written in 2016.

Based upon the title, I inferred that Quartz must receive an insignificant amount of its traffic from mobile users (tablet and phone).

Have tablets jumped the shark?

Feb 6, 2014 re/code story titled Our Love Affair With the Tablet Is Over

Is it a link bait story or valid perspective?

The tablet couldn’t possibly shoulder all the expectations people had for it. Not a replacement for your laptop or phone — but kinda. Something you kick back with in the living room, fire up at work and also carry with you everywhere — sort of.

My current laptop and my recent cell phones have been used, hand-me-down or hand-me-up devices. My last new purchases: laptop in 2002 and cell phone with plan around 2001.

Tablet-based restaurant menus

(My Feb 1, 2014 comment at ToledoTalk.com)

Revolution Grille's menu tablets are also Android-based. The hostess placed the tablets on the table as we were seated. The server, however, was still very knowledgeable and helpful. I liked the design of the menu on the tablet. It contained simple lists, organized by categories with a home menu link. For most items on the menu, "clicking" the item caused a photo of the item to appear. By hiding the images until they were clicked, this kept the menu simple and short and easy to use.

The software is called Menuvative created by Imenutech, located in Ann Arbor. Main Street Ventures also uses Menuvative in its restaurants.

Enjoying Toledo Winter 2013-2014

( My Jan 30, 2014 ToledoTalk.com comment )

Anniecski posted at 10:48:48 AM on Jan 30, 2014:
I'm thinking that 10-30 minute walk isn't going to happen in this weather. Neither will the smiling.

It happens for me. I've taken long walks in our neighborhood nearly every day this month, including this morning. Enough daylight now exists at 7:30 a.m. Wool socks, flannel-lined jeans, wool sweater, wool scarf, wool coat, snow boots, good gloves, etc. No big deal. Good gear. I don't notice the below zero temps.
