Roasting coffee beans at home

Apparently, an air popcorn popper makes a decent home roaster for coffee beans. We'll try it out. [Sep 2013 update: This works well. Roast in the evening, outside. Let beans cool and rest uncovered inside at room temp. Grind and brew in the morning. Enjoy! Store remaining roasted beans in air-tight glass container.]

On Sep 5, 2013, we received our first shipment of green coffee beans from Sweet Maria's.

Late summer 2013 bird sightings at Oak Openings Metropark

Thread at the Toledo Naturalist message board about the fall 2013 bird migration in the Oak Openings Region.

Interesting sightings of Olive-sided Flycatchers and numerous Red-headed Woodpeckers in the 2010 tornado damaged area behind the lodge at Oak Openings Metropark.

Chimney Swift show

Aug 29, 2013 post at the Toledo Naturalists message board about the evening aerial finale of the Chimney Swifts heading to bed for the night. It's a fascinating site to watch hundreds of swifts dive into a chimney at dusk.

Interesting Common Nighthawk late summer behavior

Aug 29, 2013 post at the Toledo Naturalists message board. I learned something new.

Common Nighthawks migrate south through the Toledo area primarily from mid-August to mid-September. When I have attended Saturday night football games at UT in early September, I've seen nighthawks circling at the top of the light dome. Sometimes, nighthawks can be seen in the light dome of a large shopping complex.

But I was unaware of the flying ant hatch in late summer that seems to coincide with the biggest movement of nighthawks through the Toledo area.

Backyard Tall Coreopsis flowers - 2013

#todo - [add photos and edit text]

Peak bloom for our backyard tall coreops is now (Aug 30, 2013). They've been looking great for the past two weeks, and especially over the past seven days.

Huge expansion of the tall coreopsis in our backyard this summer for some reason. Back in May, I snipped out a lot of goldenrod and phlox. Maybe that made room.

We have other Oak Openings native plants growing too, but for some reason and surprisingly, the tall coreopsis spread a lot from last fall's seeds.

I like it. It's one of my favorite flowers.

GitHub system for writers

People discussing a collaborative, version control system for writing projects and non-programmers. Some fascinating ideas and user experiences exist in these posts. Good ideas. It's an interesting area of software development that includes the Web and native apps for desktop and mobile.

I'm most interested in Web/native apps for writing, collaborating, and managing content. So that would includes software programs such as blogs, message boards, wikis, editors, content management systems, and knowledge management systems.

Only 5 days till Clemson's flying trash season begins

https://www.facebook.com/BalloonsBlow

It is interesting how it's legal to litter if the litter goes up. But the problem is, that legalized litter eventually falls down.

Throw a small piece of plastic out the window of your vehicle with the police behind you, and you could be severely fined. But release dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of helium-filled balloons, and people stupidly accept it as a fine ceremony. #moronism

2009 - Confusing real negativism with valid criticism

(From my 2009 post at ToledoTalk.com)

"In my opinion, this myth that Toledoans are negative was created by public officials and is advanced by the media in order to guilt the citizenry into not speaking out against moronic actions by public officials." - June 2007

This post is not directed at anyone here. It's a general post because the word "negative" is fashionably and incorrectly tossed around in Toledo. And I'll use a couple old posts to explain my opinion of the differences between a real negative attitude about Toledo and valid, logical criticism toward obstacles that prevent the city from getting better.
