Lake Erie Wind Turbine Farm Planned for 2017

Well initially, it may not be a farm. More like a small, rooftop garden.

Aug 20, 2013 Cleveland.com story

Lake Erie wind developers say they will have the first wind turbine pilot project built by 2017. They will be similar to these offshore wind turbines in the North Sea, offshore from a village in Denmark.

Taxpayer-subsidized "energy" project.

Golden-crowned Kinglet

(I created this page in 2007 to present at a monthly Thursday evening presentation at the Black Swamp Bird Observatory).

#todo : add references and photos

  • Regulus ("little king") satrapa
  • Among NA birds, only some hummingbirds are smaller.
  • Closely related to Goldcrest of Eurasia
    • GCKI is nearly indistinguishable from Goldcrest.
    • Even their songs are nearly identical.
    • Smallest birds able to endure freezing temps while maintaining body temp > 105 F.
    • GCKI and Goldcrest feet have grooved soles.
      • For hanging on to tips of conifer branches.

My thoughts on the Toledo Zoo

[this post is a work in progress. include more content from tt comments.] #todo

The content below is from my July 2008 posts at ToledoTalk.com

I'm specifically ripping on the Zoo's $7.5 million playground that allegedly is suppose to educate kids about nature when a trip to the library to read about nature and a trip to the outside to see real nature would do more.

When did the Internet and the Web begin

Today, it's acceptable to use the terms "Internet" and "Web" interchangeably, although technically, they are dramatically different.

Simple explanation:

  • Internet - is the network
  • Web (HTTP) - is a "program" that runs over the network

New downtown Toledo development project planned by taxpayer-owned Mud Hens baseball team

Will this quasi-taxpayer-supported (government) entity cannibalize local business? The projects "sounds" good, but microscopic inspection is required. It could be another taxpayer boondoggle, Detroitification project.

Unfortunately, no objective investigative reporting will come from the Toledo Blade, since the Blade has already published an editorial, supporting the project. Media failure.

My comment below that was posted in this August 2013 Toledo Talk thread.

Knitting scarf number two

Finished knitting this scarf.

  • It's 3 inches wide.
  • 42 inches long.
  • I used number 9 needles.
  • 12 stitches per row.
  • all knit stitch

Small, but sufficient. Can still wrap it around my neck two and a half times if necessary. Good for walking the dog, going to the store, or dining out. The longer, bigger scarf would be good for long days out in the cold birdwatching.

Ideas for future media

Good info in this August 2013 article:
http://digiday.com/publishers/bloomberg-justin-smith-modern-media

Justin Smith, the new CEO of Bloomberg Media Group, is emerging as one of the trailblazers. His track record at The Economist, The Week and, most recently, The Atlantic suggests a willingness to embrace new media models in the service of supporting quality content.

Summary: embrace change, accept uncertainty, act like entrepreneurs, quality always wins, and fight complacency.

Sori Sushi

http://www.sorisushi.com
5236 Monroe St, Toledo, OH 43623
(419) 720-7674

Full menu - pdf file of images

It's one of our favorite restaurants. Small place. I prefer to sit at the bar/counter so that we can watch Kenny prepare the food. Good show.

Sori helps wait on the customers. She also created the beautiful art that hangs on the walls. Cozy atmosphere. Delicious food.

Facebook mobile lessons that may apply to media

August 2013 ijnet.org story Lessons for news organizations from Facebook’s mobile success

The social networking behemoth's mobile conversion should be “a wake-up call for media companies and news organizations,” mobile expert Cory Bergman wrote in a recent post on Poynter. Media need “to aggressively re-engineer themselves for a new reality” in the “move from desktops to mobile devices.”

News executives have expressed an ongoing doubt that mobile will make money, taking a “wait and see” approach in making significant investments. But Bergman says news organizations need to stop being skeptical, recognize the need for mobile and “move quickly and decisively.” After all, mobile is poised to disrupt journalism just like the Internet did more than a decade ago.

A "wait and see" approach? That worked out well for the newspaper industry 15 years ago.

In 2013, academic dolts blame Craigslist for the demise of the newspaper industry

Years ago, I thought people ended their irresponsible blaming of Craigslist.org for the newspaper industry's declining revenue. I guess not. Eggheads released a study. Hey professors, the year 2000 called, and they want its stupidity back.

First, a blog post from 2007 titled:

10 obvious things about the future of newspapers you need to get through your head

2. It’s not Craig’s fault. Newspaper classifieds suck and they have for years. Either develop simple database applications with photos and maps to let your users actually find what they’re looking for, or partner with a good third-party vertical who can. Anything less is a waste of your time.
